Overview Internal, classified employee position (24‑month, full‑time, 40‑hour per week). Weekly shift: Wednesday 11:00 pm – Sunday 7:00 am (flexible weekend). 12.5% shift differential (graveyard + weekend). 12‑month term with right to extend, modify or eliminate based on available funds.
Responsibilities
Lead campus Public Safety Officers (PSO) on assigned campus or event: • Prioritize surveillance patterns; direct vehicle & pedestrian traffic; maintain visible presence.
Proactively monitor campus activity (normal business hours & after hours); maintain high level of professionalism.
Enhance customer relations: provide information & assistance, establish rapport with student community.
Attend student‑faculty meetings; receive feedback on campus areas; recommend patrol routines.
Convey college policy, rules & expectations for student conduct; answer questions from students.
Anticipate & intervene in potential incidents; protect students, staff & property.
Conduct monthly inspections (doors, windows, gates, emergency phones, AEDs, fire extinguishers); address suspicious activity.
Investigate complaints, incidents, hazardous situations; interview victims, complainants, witnesses.
Provide security at district & campus functions; direct traffic, parking enforcement.
Detect & report fire hazards; respond to alarms; extinguish small blazes as required.
Cooperate with other law enforcement agencies on investigations.
Develop & implement student activities & programs that reduce risk.
Act as public point of contact for Public Safety Department.
Follow all district policies: Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
In‑depth knowledge of security & safety enforcement methods, practices & procedures.
Knowledge of education codes, district policies, relevant laws, ordinances & motor vehicle code.
Positive behavior intervention strategies, feedback & support.
Weapon, drug, impairment detection techniques.
Background in law enforcement & custody procedures.
Vehicle operations, crowd & vehicle control; radio communication (handheld).
Math & writing skills for incident reports.
Human relations: peer‑to‑peer orientations, conflict resolution.
Physical stamina, endurance & agility per district standards.
Two‑way radio communication with campus administration & local police.
First‑aid administration for emergencies.
Education & Experience
Associate of Arts/Science degree or equivalent (21 yr of age).
Minimum three years of security/surveillance experience (city campus).
Additional education and experience may substitute for equivalent qualifications.
Evidence of sensitivity & understanding of diverse student backgrounds (California Code of Regulations Title 5 53022; Education Code Section 87360; EEO Plan).
Licenses & Certificates
Valid driver’s license.
Completed 832 P.C. Laws of Arrest, Search & Seizure course (or higher).
Completed School Security Training (SB 1626) – state‑issued license.
Current First Aid, CPR & AED certifications (reasonable time after employment).
Desirable Qualifications
Campus safety / law enforcement experience.
Knowledge of Jeanne Clery Act, Kristen Smart Act, Safe Schools Act and related penal code violations.
POST‑certified Regular Basic Course (664‑hour minimum).
