General Description And Classification Standards Performs supervisory assignments associated with operating the water/wastewater treatment plant to ensure a continuous, adequate supply of potable drinking water that meets federal and state regulations for the citizens of Atlanta. Supervises water analysis and treatment, chemical mixing, laboratory testing, operation of pumps and valves, machinery maintenance, record keeping, instruction, and discipline of assigned staff. This is a team‑lead or foreman level position with a formally designated team of skilled employees. Supervision is general, collaborative, and focuses on end results.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Generates work orders in the maintenance management system and orders chemicals and supplies. Coordinates with contractors on plant upgrades, equipment repairs, and installations. Maintains the facility to meet state and federal permit requirements. Supervises and evaluates staff, develops goals, handles employee concerns, directs work assignments, counsels and disciplines employees, and completes performance appraisals. Reviews operators’ work for accuracy and compliance with regulations. Communicates with employees to ensure proper plant operation under Standard Operating Procedures. Prepares and maintains reports, logs, and records on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Controls treatment plant processes, chemical dosages, and equipment; operates pumps and valves to regulate water flow. Assists in laboratory testing to determine chemical composition and compliance with turbidity, chlorine, fluoride, pH, iron, and manganese regulations. Adjusts chemical dosages as necessary. Records plant operation data and test results for reporting to state agencies. Handles clerical duties, including letters, reports, forms, and file maintenance.
Decision Making Selects from multiple procedures to accomplish tasks, applies organizational policies, and provides formal supervisory authority over a work group of at least 4–5 employees, including discipline, performance management, scheduling, and training.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant operations, machinery, preventive maintenance, federal/state regulations, laboratory procedures, chemistry terminology, microorganisms, back‑flow prevention, and general mechanical equipment. Skills in communication, problem solving, laboratory analysis, computer use, basic math and chemistry, water plant operation, and maintenance equipment operation. Ability to use independent judgment, manage subordinates, resolve problems, interpret regulations, perform calculations, work outdoors in all weather, read design plans, operate a vehicle, diagnose equipment malfunctions.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
5 years of work experience in a wastewater plant or related area
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with 5 years of wastewater plant experience, including 2 years of supervisory experience
Valid Georgia driver’s license, Wastewater Class I license, forklift certification desirable
