Introduction
The Department of Health Services (DHS), Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI), located on the north side of Madison, is recruiting a Power Plant Operator – Senior. This overnight position (11 pm–7 am) rotates weekends on a three on/three off schedule.
MMHI is an inpatient psychiatric facility with an outpatient program, serving complex psychiatric conditions. The plant uses natural gas and fuel oil with steam turbine and diesel generators.
Position Summary As a Power Plant Operator – Senior, you will safely operate natural gas or oil‑fired boilers, perform routine testing, inspections, maintenance and repairs, and execute lockout/tagout procedures.
Responsibilities
Safely operating natural gas or oil‑fired boilers, including routine testing, inspections, maintenance and repairs.
Performing lockout and tagout procedures to ensure equipment is shut down and inoperable until maintenance or repair work is completed.
Salary and Benefits Starting pay: $27.91 per hour. A 12‑month probationary period is required. An $0.80 per hour night differential and an $0.80 per hour weekend differential apply to worked shifts. Benefits include:
3.5 weeks of vacation, 9 paid holidays, sick time; limitations may apply for leave in the first six months.
Health plans starting at $45/month for single plans and $111/month for family plans after 2 months of state service.

Qualifications
Ability to work scheduled hours, including weekends, holidays, early mornings or evenings, and overtime.
Experience performing general maintenance and repairs using basic power tools, hand tools and motorized equipment.
Experience working in a power plant, maintaining and repairing power plant equipment.
