This position is in Driver Services/Examiner Training Unit, Department of Motor Vehicles Headquarters, Blythewood, SC

***********THIS IS A GRANT POSITION FOR A PERIOD OF 2 YEARS**********

Responsibilities of the CDL Examiner Trainer

Conducts classroom instruction on all commercial classes of license including classroom preparation utilizing the Learning Management System. Provide hands‑on training on the skills pad by performing demonstrations, evaluations/assessments on all License Examiners and 3rd Party Testers. Must also be proficient in the operation of all vehicles to conduct required training.

Delivers initial and refresher training for SCDMV and 3rd party examiners on the proper administration of CDL skills tests and examinations. Demonstrates proficiency in administering tests across all classes of commercial licenses. Provides instruction on three portions of the CDL skills test. Conducts evaluations and assessments of both SCDMV and 3rd party examiners to ensure compliance with testing standards.

Serves as an internal consultant on policies, procedures, along with State and Federal laws pertaining to all knowledge and skills licensing.

Conducts site visits to branch offices for co‑scoring purposes and reviews CDL video storage as needed for quality assurance or upon request. Provides support in the administration and use of software systems such as CSTIMS and MCDL.

Reviews existing commercial vehicle test routes and recommends revisions as needed. Designs and proposes new test routes to ensure compliance, safety, and effectiveness in evaluating CDL applicants.

Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree and relevant program experience are required. An equivalent education and relevant experience may be accepted with prior approval.

Agency Requirements

Must possess a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B and be at least 21 years of age.

Proficiency in the operation of all classes of commercial vehicles is required.

Individuals holding a Class A license must obtain a Passenger (P) endorsement.

Additional Requirements

Possesses in-depth knowledge of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) examination administration, with a strong understanding of both state and federal regulations governing CDL issuance.

Demonstrated experience as an instructor/trainer, with expertise in instructional design and adult learning methodologies.

Exceptional oral and written communication skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Skilled in coordinating, planning, implementing, and evaluating training programs for effectiveness.

Proven ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues and the public.

Reports directly to the Examiner Training Team 1 Manager and operates independently with minimal supervision. The Examiner Training Team 2 Manager may also assign tasks and provide guidance as needed.

Works in a climate‑controlled office environment as well as outdoors in varying weather conditions, including moderate to extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.

May be required to stand for extended periods while training or facilitating. Physical activities may include occasional lifting (10–15 pounds), stooping, bending, crawling, and climbing.

Overnight travel is required.
