Position Overview The Part‑Time Gallery Attendant assists patrons, offers guidance and answers questions about the museum and exhibitions, monitors the artwork during operating hours, and verifies that visitors are following appropriate museum safety and hygiene protocols. The position ensures the safety of the museum and its exhibitions, provides visitors with information, and ensures the upkeep and maintenance of the gallery.
Responsibilities
Provides courteous service to visitors by giving general information about the museum and exhibitions, including showing guests how to use/interact with exhibition components.
Greets visitors upon arrival, directs them to their place of interest, and ensures adherence to museum safety guidelines.
Performs “opening” and “closing” procedures to make sure the art is safe, activates security alarm systems, ensures the facilities are prepared and clean, and assists with cleaning exhibition components when requested.
Answers questions concerning exhibits, regulations, facilities, etc., and personalizes connections for visitors through one‑on‑one group conversation.
Monitors exhibits, guides visitors, and facilitates interactions between visitors and exhibits, including showing guests how to safely use/interact with exhibition components.
Inspects exhibit pieces and artwork regularly and notifies personnel when repair and/or replacement is needed.
Directs traffic flow, crowd control at special events and peak periods, and ensures visitors adhere to safety guidelines.
Provides an additional layer of security by monitoring visitors viewing exhibits and patrolling the assigned area during operating hours to protect the art collection, preventing touching, handling, or tampering with art displays.
Reports any suspicious activity, critical incidents, or potential safety violations immediately.
Assists with the installation of art exhibitions.
Assists with receiving and checking in deliveries for the museum and the shop.
Serves as liaison with Public Safety and Emergency Service personnel as incidents are reported.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Associate’s degree in a related field and one (1) year of experience in a museum setting; or a combination of education, training and related experience.
All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution.
Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the College professionally to the public.
Strong interpersonal skills, excellent organization and communication (both verbal and written) skills.
Ability to identify and prevent security vulnerabilities.
Ability to provide excellent customer service.
Ability to become knowledgeable about artists and exhibitions on view.
Ability to handle situations with sound judgement and tact when responding to crises and/or emergencies.
Ability to apply campus security rules and regulations.
Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening, weekend and holiday assignments.
Ability to work well in a multi‑ethnic and multi‑cultural environment with students, faculty and staff.
Preferences Knowledge of Art and Culture preferred.
Additional Requirements Successful completion of a background screening and reference check process.
