This position supports the UC Davis Dermatopathology Service and Mohs surgery by providing technical support for the Dermatopathology Laboratories as a per diem basis. Hours vary depending on workload and support needed for the Dermatopathology Service. Knowledge of guidelines established by JCAHO, CAP, CLIA, and other accrediting entities is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Working knowledge of laboratory and other basic computer programs, including Hospital Information Systems, is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

Meet CLIA/CAP High complexity testing personnel educational requirements as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1489.

No minimum work experience required.

Knowledge of frozen/paraffin sectioning and staining.

Technical and mechanical skills to operate complex lab equipment and perform preventive maintenance per established guidelines.

Knowledge of guidelines established by JCAHO, CAP, and the National Society of Histotechnology.

Knowledge of EMR and LIS and other basic computer programs.

Ability to state and follow Universal Precautions in a laboratory setting.

Knowledge of OSHA, NAACLS, CAP, and JCAHO clinical laboratory safety regulations.

Prioritize work based on departmental turnaround requirements and priority requests.

Perform complex laboratory procedures following established protocols.

Maintain legible and accurate records under time constraints.

Preferred Qualifications

Histology certification (ASCP) or eligibility.

Knowledge of UCDH and Department of Dermatology policies and procedures.

Knowledge of legislation and regulatory requirements pertaining to the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

60% – Grossing

15% – Cryotomy/Microtomy and preparation of histological and histochemical slides

10% – Perform routine immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent stains on fixed and fresh tissue

5% – Miscellaneous duties

5% – Maintenance of the laboratory

5% – Communication and problem solving

Department Overview The Department of Dermatology provides a variety of outpatient services: clinical dermatological surgical services, dermatopathology services, pigment lesion services, cosmetic surgery, and Mohs surgery.
