This position supports the UC Davis Dermatopathology Service and Mohs surgery by providing technical support in the Dermatopathology Laboratories on a per diem basis. Hours will vary depending on workload and the service’s needs. Candidates must be familiar with guidelines from JCAHO, CAP, CLIA, and other accrediting entities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and working knowledge of laboratory software, including Hospital Information Systems, are required.

Minimum Qualifications

Meet CLIA/CAP high‑complexity testing personnel educational requirements as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1489.

No minimum work experience required.

Knowledge of frozen/paraffin sectioning and staining.

Technical and mechanical skills to operate and maintain complex laboratory equipment.

Knowledge of guidelines from JCAHO, CAP, and the National Society of Histotechnology.

Proficiency with EMR and Laboratory Information System (LIS) and other basic computer programs.

Understanding of universal precautions and OSHA laboratory safety regulations.

Ability to prioritize work based on departmental turnaround requirements.

Ability to perform complex laboratory procedures following established protocols.

Ability to maintain accurate records under time constraints.

Preferred Qualifications

Histology certification (ASCP) or eligibility.

Knowledge of UCDH and Department of Dermatology policies and procedures.

Knowledge of legislation and regulatory requirements relevant to the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

60% – Grossing

15% – Cryotomy/microtomy and preparation of histological and histochemical slides

10% – Routine immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent staining on fixed and fresh tissue

5% – Miscellaneous duties

5% – Laboratory maintenance

5% – Communication and problem solving

Department Overview The Department of Dermatology provides a variety of outpatient services, including clinical dermatology surgical services, dermatopathology services, pigment lesion services, cosmetic surgery, and Mohs surgery.
