Summary Position is under classification consistency review and may result in a change in grade. The incumbent serves as a Lead Police Officer (Sergeant) ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA Administrations and properties within various settings, including VHA Medical Centers and facilities, Inpatient Clinics, Outpatient Clinics, domiciliary and administrative sites throughout the United States.

Duties

Leads a team of Police Officers and other administrative staff. Directs day‑to‑day lead policing operations and non‑lead policing assignments. Works in collaboration with the Police Supervisor carrying out the overall mission where most work is performed on Departmental property.

Assigns, distributes, reviews, approves, and disapproves employees’ assignments. Monitors and reviews the status and progress of work and makes workload adjustments to ensure balance.

Consults with the instant supervisor for assistance on problems such as backlogs and ensures timely, effective, and efficient completion of work.

Ensures employees perform assigned work promptly. Reviews police reports, patrol reports, and ongoing investigations to ensure complete, concise, and factual reporting.

Provides written instructions, reference materials, and supplies. Reviews and recommends changes to standard operating procedures. Provides onsite training and acts as a field training officer.

Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on issues that arise. Checks progress and reviews completed work to ensure it meets requirements and deadlines.

Provides input on employee performance rating and any disciplinary action. Informs employees of available services and activities.

Participates in staff selection as requested by the supervisor and coordinates staff training. Leads law‑enforcement assignments to detect, investigate, and prevent crimes, and assist citizens in emergencies.

Designated Drug‑Testing Position Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (determined on need, may vary).

Requirements

U.S. Citizen.

At least 21 years old by the closing date.

Must pass urinalysis for drug screening as described above.

Selective Service Registration–required males born after 12/31/59.

Must be accepted for or currently enrolled in a qualified educational institution.

Probationary period may be required.

Subject to background/security investigation.

Will complete an online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification.

Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.

Probationary period of 1 year; performance will be evaluated for continuation.

Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date.

GS‑08 grade level: at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑7 in the Federal service, involving knowledge of laws and regulations, law‑enforcement operations, practices, and techniques, and responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property.

Specialized experience includes:

Leading or guiding employees in response to threats, detecting criminal activity, fire and emergencies; enforcing laws; making arrests; conducting patrols; maintaining control of scenes; taking statements; preparing detailed reports; interrogating suspects; applying rules of search and seizure.

Experience may come from police forces, military police, visitor protection or law‑enforcement in parks and forests, criminal investigative duties, or other relevant work.

Experience as a security guard or corrections officer generally does not qualify.

Experience must be fully documented on the resume, including job title, duties, dates, and hours worked per week.

Driver’s License Requirement Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver’s license and pass a vehicle‑driver physical examination.

Firearm Requirement VA Police Officers are required to carry approved agency firearms while on duty on VA property and must maintain qualification and certification.

Police Officer Conditions of Employment

New officers must attend a 7‑week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center.

A medical examination is required.

Applicants must have the capacity to perform essential functions without risk to self or others.

A psychological examination is required.

A character investigation will be conducted.

Eligible officers must qualify with firearms, complete annual training, maintain a valid driver’s license, and pass physical and psychosocial assessments.

Physical Requirements The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, including standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and lifting objects up to 50 pounds.

Work Conditions Work involves moderate to high risks, requires safety precautions, and may expose personnel to hazardous materials and adverse weather conditions.

Education Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited institutions may be used to qualify.
