Through the holistic integration of its Pillars of Opportunity, SBY provides safe homes, life skills, and workforce development to meet the unique needs of homeless youth. For more than 45 years, it has implemented innovative interventions aimed at ending youth homelessness in the DC region. Today, its programs in DC and Prince George’s County, MD, reach over 6,500 runaway, homeless, abused, or neglected youth and their families.

About The Resilient Scholars Program The program works with young people who have exited or are exiting from New Beginnings and who are working towards graduating or obtaining their GED. It provides tutoring, mentoring, and workforce development through an intensive program with regular check‑ins on progress toward graduation, job readiness, and employment.

Position Summary The Education and Employment Specialist is responsible for conducting assessments and matching youth with tutors and support. The specialist ensures the implementation of education plans for each youth and establishes plans for on‑time graduation. The schedule requires 2 days 12 PM‑8 AM; 3 days 9 AM‑5 PM or 10 AM‑6 PM.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, or a Human Services related field, or equivalent experience.

Three years of experience working with at‑risk youth or vulnerable populations, preferably youth involved in the criminal justice system.

Experience in providing tutoring support and navigating the educational system.

Strong communication and organizational skills.

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; ability to pass required background clearances.

Duties and Responsibilities

Create and develop a personal Educational Plan with each youth, including the client’s definition of academic success, challenges, intended next steps, attendance, grades, progress notes, behavioral issues, modification plans, extracurricular support, and tutor assignment.

Re‑evaluate Education Plans at six‑month intervals or sooner based on client needs.

Oversee virtual and in‑person tutoring services; supervise tutors and check in regularly to ensure clients meet studying and educational goals.

Create overall curriculum and facilitate trainings and workshops on study skills, graduation requirements, trade schools, college applications, college access exams, and related topics.

Collaborate with school staff, tutoring agencies, and other educational supports when relevant.

Provide familial support services, including home visits, and involve family members in Education Plans.

Refer clients to coding and technology courses and certification programs; support clients in applying and during courses.

Collaborate with the Sasha Bruce College and Career Program Director when appropriate.

Support or provide crisis intervention and on‑site counseling when appropriate.

Complete service documentation in client case records within 24‑48 hours of the service; maintain accurate, complete, confidential case files and produce reports to track progress and outcomes.

Participate in regular team consultation meetings with staff working on shared clients.

Attend staff meetings, trainings, conferences, regular supervision, community outreach events as required; ensure 40 hours of required training annually.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager or designee.
