Presidio Trust
The Presidio Trust is seeking a Gardener to support the Natural Resources Department. The Presidio Trust is an innovative federal agency that stewards and shares the history, beauty, and wonder of the Presidio for everyone to enjoy forever. The Presidio is an American national park spanning 1,500 acres at the Golden Gate, rich in biodiversity and a popular destination. This full‑time position with benefits starts at $31.78 per hour and is included in the bargaining unit Laborers’ International Union of North America, Local 792, United Public Employees of California.
Reporting to the Ecological Horticulture Supervisor, the Gardener will work as a member of a crew and be engaged in the maintenance of outdoor areas, including designed landscapes, playgrounds, athletic fields, and concrete paving. The role involves performing a wide range of landscape maintenance duties, facilitating safe, well‑maintained, and environmentally conscientious grounds and natural resources.
Responsibilities
Maintain landscape areas, including trees, shrubs, ground cover, lawns, athletic fields, minor irrigation, playgrounds, picnic areas, camp sites, park furnishings, walks, and patios.
Follow project or planting plans prepared by landscape architects and make recommendations for appropriate plant coverage.
Use sound gardening practices, make independent judgments in treating soil, deciding which plants to transplant and how to address problem conditions.
Recommend and utilize integrated pest management methods and procedures for controlling pests; if licensed, apply pesticides as necessary according to labels, regulations, and Trust policies.
Control and eradicate weeds, mulch planting areas, mow and edge lawns, apply fertilizer, compost, and use root feeding and soil additives.
Operate a variety of landscape equipment and small utility or GSA vehicles.
Maintain the maintenance shop and storage yards for equipment and supplies. Provide traffic‑control assistance as needed.
Lead and facilitate small and large groups of Trust volunteers in specific grounds‑maintenance tasks, as directed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Four years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas.
Valid California Driver’s License.
Desired Qualifications
California Department of Pesticide Regulation QAC Category B license.
Experience with California native plants.
