Join the City and County of San Francisco as a Gardener in the Urban Forestry team.
Under general supervision you will perform routine maintenance and landscaping renovation tasks to care for athletic fields, squares, parks, playgrounds, stadiums, thoroughfares, medians, and other landscaped areas.
Essential Duties
Prepare soil by rototilling, grading, spading, and fertilizing to promote plant growth and prevent drainage problems.
Maintain plants by planting, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating, and pruning to promote plant growth and prevent deterioration.
Identify and control pests and diseases on plants and lawn areas by performing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques.
Maintain lawn areas by raking, edging, mowing, watering, weeding, aerating, fertilizing, over seeding, and other landscaping functions to promote lawn health and erosion control.
Maintain grounds of athletic fields, squares, parks, playgrounds, stadiums, thoroughfares, and other landscape areas by clearing brush and debris, sweeping, raking, cleaning litter, clearing drains, and preventing hazardous conditions.
Operate power and manual equipment such as mowers, water equipment, gopher traps, and other gardening tools to assist in maintaining landscape areas.
Perform routine maintenance on gardening equipment and tools to ensure they remain in good working condition.
Perform general maintenance duties on grounds and facilities such as athletic fields, sandboxes in parks, public easements, restroom facilities, irrigation systems, and other ground and facility areas to ensure clean and safe premises.
May be assigned to work with and/or direct the work of volunteers.
Work in inclement weather and in hazardous conditions, including exposure to feces, urine, used syringes, and other materials. Positions require driving and may involve riding mowers, driving small utility vehicles, and working in public spaces including parks and schools. Some positions may require weekend or shift work.
Must be able to lift, drag, and move large and heavy plants and equipment, kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods safely and correctly.
Qualifications
Three (3) years of verified experience in the care, construction, or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and controlling pests in sports and athletic natural turf fields, golf courses, parks, ornamental gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens, and/or public landscaped areas.
OR possess a Certificate of Achievement from an accredited college or university in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, nursery and garden center operation, commercial cut flower and greenhouse production, or related field and two (2) years of verifiable experience in the same areas.
OR possess an Associate of Arts or Science degree in a related field and eighteen (18) months of verifiable experience in the same areas.
OR completion of 3,000 hours of the City and County of San Francisco's gardener apprenticeship program.
License: Holds a valid California driver's license with no restrictions that would prohibit performing the essential functions of the role.
Notice: One (1) year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2,000 hours (40 hours per week).
