Description
The Associate Director of Optometry is an essential member of the TVHC team. By leading and empowering team members in the delivery of high quality, accessible, and equitable care, we can collaboratively improve the health and well‑being of our communities. Under the direct supervision of the Chief Integration Officer (CIO), the Associate Director of Optometry is responsible for the day‑to‑day supervision of vision care services. The position requires strong leadership skills, the ability to work diplomatically between interdisciplinary groups, and the ability to apply a solutions‑oriented approach to Optometry department issues that may arise throughout the day.
Schedule This is a full‑time position working 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday hours. The schedule includes two (2) hours per week of leadership time for departmental and personnel oversight (pro‑rated).

Compensation $139,256.00 - $152,172.80, depending on experience, with an additional $10,000 per year leadership stipend! Responsibilities
Manages administrative responsibilities such as effective integration and coordination of the optometry department; scheduling and conducting departmental staff meetings, orienting, and mentoring new providers; ensuring clinical staff are updated and / or trained to standards for supporting optometrists.
Utilizes department and individual‑specific data and dashboards to guide operational and clinical excellence
Supervises, mentors, coaches, and develop clinicians utilizing qualitative and quantitative data.
Develop educational programming and support as needed for department and the patients served.
Participates in the recruitment, hiring, corrective action counseling and terminations as needed
Responsible for peer review process and performance review for direct reports.
Supports the teams and ensure accurate and timely completion of E.H.R documentation and follow‑up tasks.
Assumes clinical responsibility in conjunction with the Chief Integration Officer. Provides regular, ongoing, and special reporting in functional areas. Facilitates monthly department meeting in support and alignment with the mission, vision and values of the organization
Fosters an environment that promotes TVHC’s Quality Initiatives and supports removing barriers to achieving quality in medical care. Promotes a positive working culture and actively engages in constructive problem solving. This includes the development of clinical pathways to reduce unwarranted practice variation
Perform optometry assessments, including a thorough history , ordering or performing certain diagnostic tests, medication orders, and diagnose the nature of common acute and chronic conditions, and any necessary follow‑up care.
Provides direct clinical services in the area of specialty in accordance with the highest applicable standards of medical and professional practice standards and in full accordance with health center protocols, policies and Job Description of Associate Director.
Provides leadership, vision, and direction for the department, including assisting in formulation and / or revision of services policies and protocols and supporting the federal , state compliance audits.
Assist in the design, implementation, and evaluation of TVHC’s optometry program. Assist in planning and supervising new technologies and programs. Works collaboratively with other departments for the successful integration of services as appropriate.
Demonstrates commitment to, and understanding of, TVHC’s Service Excellence Standards, by modeling service excellence in all internal and external relationships, addressing service excellence deficits in staff, and in performance of all duties and responsibilities of this position.
In the absence of CIO, or when directed by the CEO or Designee : may be asked to assume responsibilities and authorities of Chief Integration Officer, on an interim basis as required to ensure regulatory compliance and the ongoing clinic operations of TVHC.
Collaborates with Management Team members, as directed, to develop strategies and policies and provides consultation within scope of responsibility.
Performs other related duties as may be assigned by Chief Integration Officer and or Chief Executive Officer.
Requirements
Must have a license as an OD from an accredited optometry program.
Current, valid license to practice medicine in the State of California, including DEA license (if applicable) and CPR required.
Minimum three (3) years of clinical experience required.
Minimum two (2) years of experience supervising providers and other clinical staff preferred.
Experience in underserved communities or in a community health center setting preferred.
Qualifications
Proficiency in clinical practice within the scope of optometry services.
Ability to travel to designated locations as required by supervisor.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team, in collaborative settings, required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
Understands and is committed to maintaining the highest level of confidentiality.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to staff and build the trust and respect of patients, staff, colleagues, and external contacts.
Commitment to remaining up-to-date with evidence-based, best practices in optometry / vision services especially in a FQHC setting.
Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends, as needed.
Ability to utilize computer technology preferred, and willingness to develop and adapt to the evolving technological requirements of modern medical health center practices required.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to staff and build the trust and respect of patients, staff, colleagues, and external contacts.
Commitment to remaining up-to-date with evidence-based, best practices in optometry / vision services especially in a FQHC setting.
Demonstrates flexibility regarding job duties and assignments.
