Job Summary Examine commercial and residential building plans to assure compliance with building and safety codes, interpret building and safety codes and Building Safety Department (BSD) policy objectives, and provide assistance to the public with building code and permitting questions under general supervision.
Typical Classification Essential Duties
Perform reviews of site plan, floor plans, foundation plan, elevations, foundation details, framing details, and electrical plans, mechanical and section details, and other reviews such as photovoltaic solar plan review.
Verify plans are in compliance with Pinal County adopted building codes.
Collaborate with architects, drafting firms, contractors and homeowners regarding building codes questions.
Provide answers and guidance to building construction questions and reference building codes.
Interpret building code and assist with structure design to meet the intent of the building code.
Help provide technical information.
Examine commercial, industrial and residential building plans and specifications to assure compliance with building and safety codes and interpret building and safety codes and Building Safety Department (BSD) policy objectives.
Identify technical issues and suggest solutions.
Provide assistance to the public with building code and permitting questions.
Assist BSD staff with code interpretation, analysis, research, decision standards, and compliance recommendations.

Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records and restricted County information.
Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Five (5) years of plans examination experience.
International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector or Building Plans Examiner (IBC) certification is required within one (1) year of hire.
Valid Driver’s License and Arizona State Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
Or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
Special Requirements
International Code Council (ICC) Building Inspector or Building Plans Examiner (IBC) certification is required within one (1) year of hire.
Certification shall be kept up to date.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of Federal, state, and regional building, housing, and technical codes and regulations.
Knowledge of building construction principles, practices, materials, and methods.
Knowledge of current and evolving trends in building technologies and construction methods.
Skill in interpreting building and safety regulations and comparing them with plans, maps, and technical specifications.
Ability to provide advice and consultation on compliance requirements.
Ability to work with representatives of other state and regional planning agencies to address and resolve technical issues.
Physical Demands The work is light and requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. The work also requires the ability to finger, reach, perform repetitive motion, stand, hear, speak, walk, operate motor vehicles and demonstrate mental and visual acuity.
Work Environment Work is performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.
