Description of Work Salary Range: $37,621–$54,078 Salary Grade: NC05‑NC07 All hires eligible for a $3,000 Sign‑on Bonus. All positions eligible for an $1,000 Employee Referral Bonus. New Step Pay Plan approved by the NC Legislature offering competitive starting salaries and guaranteed annual increases based on experience.
Officer Levels
Correctional Officer I:
Minimum custody level. Offenders require a minimum amount of oversight; they may enter/exit cells without permission during certain times of the day.
Correctional Officer II:
Medium custody level. Offenders require more supervision than Minimum but less than Close.
Correctional Officer III:
Close custody level. Offenders must be closely supervised with heavy control of movement.
Management Preferences
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Required Qualifications Applicant must have an active Driver's License. Offenders are assigned to various custody levels. Skills and knowledge related to each level vary accordingly.
Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
Tour assigned areas, including periodically climbing stairs.
Observe offender activity in person and on closed‑circuit monitors.
Identify offenders with behavioral, medical, or other problems for appropriate safety and security measures.
Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.
Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement.
Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
Use and maintain keys and other equipment.
Supervise offender work details.
Specific security duties vary by post‑assignment.
Personal Appearance Employees must adhere to an appearance and grooming standard and be in compliance with the policy.
Work Schedule This is a full‑time position. Employees must be able to work any shift including rotating, fixed shift, or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
Correctional Officer I: High School or GED diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Correctional Officer II: High School or GED diploma + one year of experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.
Correctional Officer III: High School or GED diploma + two years of experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent.
Special Qualifications
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
