Job Summary This job is responsible for providing direct patient care in the ICU setting within the CNA job scope. This job is also responsible for order transcription and order entry as well as all other HUC roles. This job is also responsible for all telemetry‑monitoring functions in the ICU and across the facility. The job exists to provide patient care as part of the team, meet regulatory standards for monitoring cardiac function. This job is responsible for assisting in the delivery of non‑professional nursing care in a defined care team and in accordance with scope of practice for the Franciscan Health System. An incumbent performs the basic aspects of general patient care where the services of a registered or licensed practical nurse are not required. Employees assist medical/nursing staff in the examination, treatment and care of patients, including the transport of patients and equipment and assisting in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients. Work also includes performing surveillance of cardiac rhythms at a central monitoring station, and for recognizing, recording and reporting potentially dangerous rhythm changes and arrhythmias in accordance with established standards and procedures. Work is performed under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities
This job is responsible for providing direct patient care in the ICU setting within the CNA job scope.
Order transcription and order entry, as well as all other HUC roles.
Telemetry‑monitoring functions in the ICU and across the facility.
Assist in the delivery of non‑professional nursing care in a defined care team.
Assist medical/nursing staff in examination, treatment and care of patients.
Surveillance of cardiac rhythms at a central monitoring station.
Recognize, record and report dangerous rhythm changes and arrhythmias.
Work under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
Essential Duties
Provide patient personal care/hygiene and physical comfort, including feeding, bathing, shaving, changing clothes, bed making, ambulation, lifting, turning, moving, transferring, skin care and bowel/bladder elimination. Provide additional care as required to meet the personal primary needs and comfort of assigned patients based on skill, ability, limitations of scope of practice and patient acuity. Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures/examinations.
Perform, monitor, report and document all clinical activities within scope of practice.
Observe and report changes in patient condition to the RN.
Obtain labels and transport a variety of samples, including urine, stool, sputum specimens and blood products.
Assist nursing staff in admission, discharge and transfer of patient by performing activities such as inventory/storing patient belongings and providing personal care/comfort items.
Assist in getting patients to designated rooms using wheelchairs, stretchers or patient bed.
Perform receptionist and support duties at the assigned unit; handle incoming and outgoing communications, transfer calls appropriately, greet and assist visitors, answer questions in accordance with established procedures.
Provide general support activities for the unit.
Monitor patient’s cardiac rhythms and/or oxygen saturation using appropriate cardiac monitoring equipment; obtain baseline ECG strip on all monitored patients according to department guidelines; record and post cardiac strips.
Recognize rhythms that could affect patient physiology and obtain a documentary ECG strip; report all arrhythmias to the RN responsible for the patient.
Maintain understanding of technical operation of the central monitoring station, maintain alarm systems according to protocols, respond to monitor alarms, identify and troubleshoot routine technical problems with the monitors and send work orders for maintenance.
Handle incoming and outgoing communications, answer questions and assist staff in accordance with established procedures.
Maintain a safe work and patient environment, adhere to hospital safety, risk management and regulatory standards, maintain neat and organized work environment, order, stock and replenish supplies as necessary, enter equipment repair requests, tag equipment and remove from service.
Participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives and activities; pursue growth opportunities.
Cultural sensitivity and competence: Demonstrate proper use of communication tools/materials and understand cultural impacts on patient care; demonstrate knowledge and skills associated with the department’s specific populations served.
Perform related duties as required.
Job Requirements Education & Experience Completion of an accredited Nursing Assistant program (or military medical specialty training). Six months related work experience preferred. Graduation from an accredited monitor technician/health unit coordinator training course preferred. Completion of a basic dysrhythmia interpretation course required within six months of hire. Preference is given toward applicants with experience as both a Certified Nursing Assistant and Unit Coordinator.
Licensure & Certification
Must be licensed by the Washington State Nursing Commission as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Current American Heart Association healthcare provider BLS certification is required.
