Scope and Summary Milwaukee Film’s Film Programmers perform research and functions leading to the booking and selection of films. Bringing expertise and focus to the work, they help us achieve a balanced program of films and support the systems and processes of other departments. The Cine Sin Fronteras Programmer will be charged with conducting research, requesting screeners, reviewing films and making selections (and booking when instructed) and hosting screenings for the Cine Sin Fronteras program for the 2026 Milwaukee Film Festival. This program category is expected to be comprised approximately 6-8 features and/or a shorts program, though those numbers are subject to change as the work unfolds.

This is a seasonal, part time role with variable hours week-to-week as the festival planning develops. The Cine Sin Fronteras Programmer will be paid at an hourly rate of $15-18 based on hours logged on a bi-weekly pay schedule from commencement of work in November 2025 until mid May 2026. Contract is expected to accrue 375-420 hours over this period of time. Other than attending regular programming meetings and certain events in lead up to or during the festival (Apr 16-30, 2026), hours may be worked flexibly.

Key Responsibilities

Perform research about films and rightsholders – in area of oversight

View titles in consideration for programming, providing written ratings and comments

Serve as primary decision-maker for inclusion of films in programs of direct oversight and expertise in concert with Milwaukee Film’s overall artistic vision and mission, consulting with colleagues when helpful

Attend weekly programming meetings (currently on Wednesdays at 3:30pm, but subject to change should schedule require)

Book films (based on assignments), confirming and negotiating terms of exhibition within organization budget and other parameters for exhibition, meeting deadlines provided by supervisor

Maintain consistency of film programming work between areas, using systems as defined to assure consistency of film records (Eventival, Asana, other tools) and create or select materials to support marketing and development efforts

Present films to audiences, facilitate Q&As with guests

Perform press/media as requested by marketing team, especially when Spanish language interviews are requested

Stay current on the latest best practices in film programming, cinema/festival exhibition, industry shifts, equity and inclusion, and other relevant professional developments.

Complete wrap for festival and discuss with supervisor by May 8, 2026

Performs other duties, as needed.

Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in relevant media or humanities field or commensurate paid or unpaid work experience

A minimum of 2 years film programming experience (paid or unpaid) with experience in cinema of the Latino/Latina diaspora

Experience with public speaking, Spanish Language fluency preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of current cinema and film festival programmatic and operational trends and best practices, understanding of industry issues and technologies; depth of knowledge in specific area of film programming specialty for role and areas of oversight.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Exceptional writing, communication, and presentation skills.

Must be a big picture thinker paired with deep analytical and detail-orientation using judgment that is consistent with Milwaukee Film’s standards, practices, policies and procedures.

Past experience successfully managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously with competing deadlines.

Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and proactively develop alternative solutions or processes.

Must be a dynamic, resourceful, authentic, level-headed professional with the confidence to express a strong point of view and provide honest feedback, and who can work collaboratively to drive the best results for, ultimately, our audiences and artists.

High level of personal integrity.

Adept with Eventival or other festival databases, Microsoft Office applications, and digital communications channels.

Work Relationships & Scope Reports to Programming Director. Occasional contact with Marketing and Operations teams. The programming team works in a collaborative model and is expected to share responsibility to and for one another’s areas of oversight, this seasonal role is intended to fit into that while having more tightly defined festival responsibilities than others. Film Programmers follow direction and processes provided from other members of the Programming team, have decision making over selections in their areas of oversight (within the parameters provided), and secure the input and/or approval of leadership staff pertinent to area of decision in making decisions when answers are not clear and further guidance or input is needed.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Mental Demands

Film Programmers may work remotely or in our office environment; about 10% of work is required on-site in Milwaukee at historic cinemas with varying degrees of accessibility accommodations available to perform this role

Ability to work at computer (administratively) ~80% of the time, in meetings and other live communications settings ~10% of the time

Working hours are part time and very flexible, excepting required meetings scheduled in advance and the in-person events with required attendance

Ability to travel between multiple Milwaukee locations (when working live events) and, occasionally, to travel outside of Milwaukee

Ability to manage what may occasionally be considerable stress in healthy ways

Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with colleagues, external partners, and audiences of varying sizes (includes large, public audiences)

Read/interpret digital and paper documents and to watch and rate films in consideration for programming (often without accommodations such as captions or audio description available)

Physical dexterity to operate a computer and other equipment
