About the Position
This position is responsible for processing samples for testing, performing assigned laboratory tests, and accurately recording and reporting results on aggregate and soil materials. The role ensures that all results meet contract specifications and compliance standards.
Major Duties and Responsibilities

Materials Testing
- Processes materials samples and performs tests on construction materials in accordance with applicable ASTM, AASHTO, and Colorado Procedures.
- Determines required testing needs based on the sample submitted and identifies if all necessary tests can be performed based on the sample size submitted.
- Verifies that the correct testing standard is applied and evaluated by looking up project special provisions.
Reporting Test Results
- Inputs lab test data into unit spreadsheets and ATSER for Materials, assigns lab test numbers, and generates worksheets.
- Records and prepares test reports for supervisor’s review, providing explanations and answering questions for test data.
Equipment Maintenance
- Provides regular maintenance of equipment in accordance with manufacturers maintenance schedule and CDOT, AMRL & CCRL criteria.
- Documents all maintenance schedules and any necessary repairs performed in accordance with AASHTO R-18.
Receive and Login Samples
- Receives and reviews information on delivered samples to ensure proper tracking of samples.
Training & Setup
- Assists in training technicians, assistants, and region testers, demonstrating proper test methods.
CCRL/AASHTO re:source Accreditation
- Assists in the CCRL/AASHTO re:source accreditation in the Soils Lab, including testing, documentation, calibration, checking equipment, and other duties in accordance with AASHTO R-18.
Training and Instruction
- Trains and instructs Region materials and project personnel in the testing of concrete and physical properties.
- Participates in training courses and certifications as an instructor and/or proctor.
Other Duties As Assigned
- Assists lab personnel with retrieving material from the field and picking up lab supplies.
- Operates forklift to load and unload equipment, test samples and supplies, moving and placing heavy items and equipment within the laboratories.
Work Environment
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or wind conditions caused by the weather.
- Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force regularly to move objects.
- Exposure to non‑weather related hot and cold temperatures.
- Contact with water and other liquids or exposure to non‑weather related humid conditions.
- Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, mists, gases, dusts and poor ventilation that may affect respiratory system, eyes or skin.
- Proximity to moving mechanical parts.
- Exposure to radiant energy.
- Exposure to shaking objects or surfaces.
- Performs high heat testing.
- Exposure to high pressure conditions, toxic vapors or caustic chemicals.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
- Five (5) years of experience in any combination of design assistance of construction plans, monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and documentation.
- Combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 5 years, e.g., completion of engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management or other relevant coursework (transcripts required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated success with duties listed in the Description of the Job.
- Years of State service experience related to duties of this position.
- Familiarity and knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and CDOT Field Materials Manual and CDOT testing procedures.
- Knowledge of AMRL/CCRL proficiency samples testing or certifications.
- Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong technical detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and in team situations.
- Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects.
- Strong mathematical skills, time management skills, flexibility, passion for safety, analytical and problem‑solving ability.
- Excellent MS Office skills (Word, Excel) and ability to learn new software quickly.
- Certifications in WAQTC, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I and II, CDOT School of Radiological Safety and Nuclear Gauge Operation.
