Schedule Hours:
40 hours per week (MondayFriday, 7:30 AM3:30 PM) Travel Expectations: 50% in-state travel, 25% out-of-state travel, 25% in-office (no remote options) Travel is typically planned in advance, but flexibility is key. This person builds their own schedule and visits sites as needed. Two additional Safety Managers handle most of the field work and serve as assistants. In the event of an incident or OSHA inspection, the Director may have only a few hours' notice to travel to a site. Travel expenses are being restructured; a company vehicle and access to a company card for travel expenses are expected. A dedicated teammate will assist with booking flights, hotels, and other travel logistics.
Scope of Work This position supports a long-established, family-owned general contractor specializing in commercial, industrial, educational, and retail construction projects. The company manages design-build and real estate development projects across Iowa and throughout the United States, with a strong focus on quality, safety, and long-term client relationships. Typical work includes construction for national retail brands, hospitality, healthcare, senior living facilities, and large-scale commercial developments.
Role Overview The
Safety Director
serves as the driving force behind the company's safety culture, leading strategy, training, compliance, and engagement with purpose and professionalism. You will set the standard for safety excellence, mentor a capable team, and ensure that all operations meet or exceed regulatory requirements. Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Health, Construction Management, or a related field (Master's degree preferred). Certifications: OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification (required) OSHA 510/500 Certification (required) CSP, CHST, STS, or CSHO (preferred professional designations) Experience:
Minimum 710 years of progressive safety experience in construction, general contracting, or industrial environments, including at least 3 years in a senior or director-level safety leadership role. Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and NFPA standards. Experience managing multi-state or national safety programs. Proficiency in safety software, audits, and compliance documentation. Skills and Competencies: Proven ability to lead and develop safety teams. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with executives, field teams, and clients. Demonstrated success in reducing incident rates and improving safety metrics. Strategic thinking, problem-solving, and risk mitigation capabilities. Other Requirements: Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally and nationally. Ability to perform site visits, inspections, and field audits as needed.
