L2 Field Engineer - Chicago, IL

Job purpose: The L2 Field Engineer leads field-based deployment and maintenance activities, applying advanced technical knowledge to resolve complex issues, coordinate tasks, and support junior engineers. The role ensures high-quality service delivery through proactive fault management, technical leadership, and adherence to engineering best practices. By combining hands-on execution with mentoring, the L2 Field Engineer enhances team capability and drives continuous improvement in technical performance. Main Responsibilities
Provide First Line Maintenance support for Indigo Telecom Group to the current customer base. Carry out installation and commissioning duties in both a project and maintenance environment. Respond to interventions in a timely manner, ensuring SLA’s are met where reasonably possible. Provide OOH on-call cover as required by agreed on-call rota. Provide Indigo GSD with regular up-to-date information on progress of intervention. Provide Line Manager and relevant Project Managers with feedback regarding on-site issues. Complete and submit all paperwork and documentation within SLA. Fault finding; lead on resolving complex technical problems and receive instructions from NOC to resolve outstanding issues. Provide first line leadership and direction to engineers; define and implement Field Quality Installation Standards; consult on Infrastructure Services and assist in the relevant Service Partner management programmes. Installation of metalwork, basket work and basic rack and stack services. Fibre and cable pulling, dressing, labeling and securing of cables. Copper Cable termination including Cat x and E1 terminations. Ensure continuity, test and measurement of cable and fibre runs. Electrical connectivity of 240v AC plug & play and -48v DC to distribution panels (no power up until certification). Field Installation Supervision of internal and external team members. Controls and manages Risk Assessment Method Statement documentation. Provides Field Installation Quality Audit Services of installation works to required standards including planning and monitoring of rectification works and improvement plans. Adhere to KPI’s and provide feedback on performance of deployment individuals and teams to Line manager(s). Intermediate fault diagnosis skills using OTDR and Ethernet/OSA testing procedures. Intermediate fault diagnosis skills (including use of appropriate test gear) to support extensive standalone and network commissioning procedures. Provide coaching (hands-on training) through lab workshops. Owns the project when designated as lead engineer; provide a point of contact for escalation of technical issues arising in a project. Responsible for producing accurate, high-quality project documentation. May provide closer level of assistance to the Project Manager by carrying out basic project management tasks. Where required, perform, manage and record HSE and SVSA inspections. Operates across complex networks, technologies and languages. Take ownership of assigned faults through to resolution. Establish and maintain excellent working relationships. Comply with company and local standards, procedures and protocols with responsibility for performance to engineering KPIs. Ensure Health & Safety and Engineering Quality standards are maintained. Represent Indigo Telecom Group in a professional manner. Demonstrate flexibility to meet business requirements. Essential
Qualified and highly experienced in physically building Telecoms Infrastructure services from plans to quality requirements. Experience as a Commissioner in network commissioning, providing network test and fault finding, leadership and mentoring to junior staff, and input to technical designs; demonstrates leadership qualities. Extensive hands-on experience and advanced technical skills including: Transmission Systems (PDH/SDH/DWDM and Optical); Structured Cabling Competency; IP WAN and LAN networking and VoIP; testing protocols (10/100/1000Mbps, 10G, 40G & 100G); Voice, Data and IP services/networks in public and private sectors; Support Systems (AC/DC power, TSC and BMS). Experience installing, maintaining and commissioning equipment from Ciena, Infinera, Nokia, Juniper, and Cisco; strong knowledge of networking, optical transmission systems and IP; proven customer interface skills. Excellent report writing abilities and fluency in written and spoken English. Able to work under pressure and positively influence others. PC literate, especially Microsoft Office 365 suite. Ability to manage own workload and meet all SLAs. Flexible approach to the role with ability to adapt to business needs. Full Valid Driving Licence Working Environment
