Senior Laboratory Technician - Biology / Chemistry / Biochemistry (BBC)
Senior Laboratory Technician position at Florida International University (FIU) supporting Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry teaching labs and stockroom operations.
Overview Assists with the maintenance and supervision of teaching labs and stockroom. Supports training of staff members and works with the lab manager to assure operational efficiency of undergraduate teaching labs, proper use and upkeep of equipment, and evaluation of waste disposal and management procedures.
Responsibilities
Maintain an equipment assignment/location log and monitor annual inventory counts and conditions of lab equipment.
Assist and oversee the set-up of equipment and materials for course instruction.
Manage internal chemical inventory and Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) records and updates.
Assist instructors during laboratory demonstrations by gathering materials and testing demos or activities for active learning.
Collaborate with the Lab Manager to complete HR actions for posting and hiring of temporary employees and student assistants.
Train lab workers, instructors, and student employees in preparing solutions/ specimens, setting up and operating lab equipment, safe use of chemicals and proper disposal of chemical and biohazard waste; may assign and review work of student staff.
Assist students, student staff, and lab instructors with the usage of pertinent software and instrumentation (e.g., GC, NMR and others).
Maintain and upkeep EHS safety training records for all staff and instructors; communicate training expirations and renewals.
Monitor and ensure compliance with laboratory procedures, policies and safety practices following EHS guidelines.
Submit EHS waste requests and coordinate with EHS for proper hazardous waste disposal and protocols.
Maintain lab spaces and submit work orders as needed.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma and five (5) years of experience, or Associate's degree and three (3) years of experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with lab instruments, equipment, biological specimens and chemicals.
Experience with hazardous waste disposal.
Education in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Laboratory techniques and skills.
