Job Summary Assists with the maintenance and supervision of teaching labs and stockroom. Assists in the training of staff members. Works with the lab manager to assure operational efficiency of the undergraduate teaching labs and proper use and upkeep of equipment. Evaluates and assists with waste disposal and management procedures.
Responsibilities
Maintains an effective equipment assignment/location log. Monitors annual inventory count and conditions of all the lab equipment.
Assists and oversees the set-up of equipment and materials for course instruction.
Manages internal chemical inventory and Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) and corresponding updates on a regular basis.
Assists instructors during laboratory class demonstrations by gathering materials and testing possible demos or activities for active learning classes.
Works with the Lab Manager to complete HR actions for job posting and hiring of temporary employees, and student assistants.
Trains lab workers, lab instructors, and student employees in preparing solutions/ & specimens, setting up and operating lab equipment, the safe use of chemicals and the correct disposal of chemical and biohazard waste. May assign and review work of student staff.
Assists students, student staff, and lab instructors with the usage of pertinent software.
Assists student staff, lab instructors and students in the use of instrumentation including GC, NMR and others.
Maintains and upkeeps Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Safety Training Records for all staff and Lab Instructors and ensures compliance. Informs staff and lab instructors regarding training expirations and renewals.
Monitors and ensures compliance with laboratory procedures, policies and safety practices following EHS guidelines and regulations.
Submits EHS waste request and works with EHS with proper hazardous waste disposal and protocols.
Maintains and upkeeps lab spaces and submits work orders as needed.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma and five (5) years of experience, or Associate's degree and three (3) years of experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience working with lab instruments, equipment, biological specimens and chemicals.
Experience with hazardous waste disposal.
Education in Biology, Chemistry or any related field of study.
Laboratory techniques and skills.
