NATIONAL CENTER FOR CHILDREN’S ILLUSTRATED LITERATURE (NCCIL) — JOB DESCRIPTION: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Application materials received by March 1, 2025 will receive first consideration. The NCCIL aims to inspire and empower children to read and be creative, promoting children’s literacy in the Abilene community and beyond. Abilene is home to approximately 130,000 residents and the Storybook Capital of America®. The city’s annual CALF festival and NCCIL exhibitions are part of the local cultural landscape. Accountability:
The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. Authority:
The Executive Director has the authority to carry out duties within bylaws, policies, plans, and budgets approved by the Board; to review, employ, discharge, or promote employees; and to enter into contracts, agreements, and grants on behalf of NCCIL, provided they align with policies and budget. Conditions of Employment
The Executive Director is employed by the Board of Directors and is subject to NCCIL personnel policies for a period as mutually satisfactory to employer and employee. Responsibilities
The Executive Director provides conceptual leadership in all NCCIL operations and, with the Board, is responsible for intellectual and programmatic direction, including exhibition planning and presentation; management of staff; financial health; and fundraising efforts. The Executive Director acts as a central figure in establishing the NCCIL’s presence in the community and collaborates with internal and external constituents. Essential Job Responsibilities and Duties Implements all official Board of Directors policies. Raises funds and solicits major gifts to finance programs, exhibitions, and operations. Leads long-range and strategic planning; works with the Board to implement strategic plans. Hires, supervises, and evaluates all NCCIL employees. Prepares and monitors the NCCIL budget and provides accounting to the Board. Oversees management of all NCCIL facilities. Ensures short and long-range goals are developed and implemented by departments (development, finance, exhibitions and programming, collections, education, touring, marketing). Directs and approves exhibition and program schedules. Serves as the principal public persona of the institution. Leads the Board in executing and defining the NCCIL’s mission and main strategies. Represents the NCCIL in local, state, regional, and national organizations. Line responsibilities Management, Planning and Development Objectives. Authority to employ/discharge personnel and determine duties and salaries within NCCIL resources. Provide opportunities for ongoing staff training. Organizing and delegating; reviewing and maintaining job descriptions; coordinating activities of all NCCIL staff. Leading and communicating; aligning staff with NCCIL objectives and policies. Performance standards for staff; evaluating procedures and controls; ensuring building and grounds housekeeping and maintenance. Coordinate with Exhibitions and Programming Committee to identify artists, evaluate and present artists, and negotiate contracts for exhibition. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Advanced degree in Art, History, Museum Studies, Non-Profit or relevant field; business minor/experience beneficial. Significant museum experience; 3–5 years of managerial level experience. Experience in fundraising and administration; excellent supervisory and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently under pressure; strong time management, written and verbal communication. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills; familiarity with museum planning and research methods; competent computer, database, and desktop publishing skills. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate innovative programs, manage multiple tasks, and interact professionally with staff and the public. Demonstrated public speaking ability and collaborative leadership. Expected Salary : The expected annual salary range for this position is between $75,000 and $90,000 and includes a benefits package and paid time off. Additional Roles and Status
