Data Science (in Computer Science & Software Engineering) Tenure‑Track Faculty Position – the Computer Science and Software Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California (Cal Poly) invites applications for a full‑time, academic year, tenure‑track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2026.

Cal Poly has a tradition of excellence in teaching and scholarship that supports a curriculum centered on a “Learn by Doing” philosophy and focuses on preparing graduates to make a positive impact on their world day one. Faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogic skills, remain proficient and current in their disciplines, and perform high‑quality scholarly work as evidenced by external peer review. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and master’s level courses, support and expand curricular development in computer science and/or software engineering, and engage in service activities at all levels of the university.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience of the individual selected. Qualified candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply. Anticipated hiring range: $110,000 – $123,000 per year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Data Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered but must prove the doctorate was awarded prior to or by the start of the appointment.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.

Ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program involving undergraduate and graduate students and partnerships with key stakeholders.

Experience and commitment to hands‑on, student‑centered learning and teaching, and ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary settings.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated excellence in university‑level teaching and research, experience with laboratory‑based instruction, and/or industry experience.

Experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Ability to teach courses in areas of need: data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, databases, data visualization, data ethics, data engineering, data mining, and big data.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS The person holding this position is a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083.

A background check, including a criminal records check, must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work. Failure to complete the background check may result in withdrawal of the offer of employment. Cal Poly cannot deny a position solely or in part due to a criminal conviction history until it has performed an individualized assessment linking the conviction history with specific job duties.
