Alta is looking for a Senior Civil Engineering Project Manager to join our growing practice in Durham.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who believes in the importance of active, multimodal, and sustainable transportation. In this role, you will work on the design of a variety of sustainable transportation projects and focus on making a positive impact on communities around the Carolinas and across the country. You will collaborate closely with planners, landscape architects, graphics designers, outreach specialists, and data analysts in a multidisciplinary environment.

Day to Day Our Senior Civil Engineering Project Manager will be involved in helping foster livable communities in all parts of the country. Projects will range from natural surface trails to large arterial multi‑use paths, Complete Streets, and regional/multi‑state bicycle and trail networks.
Day to Day Responsibilities
Managing a variety of transportation projects from design through construction, driving project success and providing influence to sustainable projects.
Implementing best practices and process improvements to enhance project delivery efficiency and effectiveness.
Mentoring staff and contributing to internal professional development and training of the technical engineering team.
Providing leadership and technical expertise to the Engineering team while collaborating with other disciplines (planning, landscape, data).
Preparing schedules, budgets, and scope of services for projects.
Balancing workload across projects.
Supporting the regional leader in business development.
Providing quality control over team deliverables.
Qualifications Required:
12+ years of experience as a Transportation Engineer in a consulting environment or public entity, with 5+ years as a Project Manager and 3+ years managing staff.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
Professional Engineering (P.E.) license or TE (Traffic Engineer) licensure.
Experience in the field of active, non‑motorized transportation.
Experience with DOT and federally funded design projects is strongly desired.
Demonstrated understanding of preparing Plans, Specifications, and Estimates packages for roadway projects and a detailed understanding of project management principles, methods, and techniques.
Ability to guide staff members and manage internal team expectations.
Strong initiative and ability to enhance Alta’s position in the marketplace.
Ability to manage competing priorities, multiple simultaneous projects involving cross‑functional teams within budgetary and schedule constraints.
Willingness to travel.
Excellent professional ethics, leadership skills, accountability, and decision‑making capabilities.
Good presentation skills.
Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word, MS Project or equivalent, AutoCAD or MicroStation.
Proficiency in an enterprise‑wide resource planning and project management tool.
Additional skills that would be beneficial include:
Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
Experience managing large projects for both private and public clients.
Experience using Deltek Vision.
Active participation in industry‑relevant professional associations and committees.
What We Offer Flexible Schedule Alta offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule where most employees work from home three days per week. In‑office days support our collaborative culture.
Compensation The pay range for this role in Durham is $120,000–$170,000 annually. Placement within the range is based on experience, skill sets, and qualifications.
