Controller – Nonprofit Organization
About the Role: A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking a strategic and hands-on Controller to lead its financial operations. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role will oversee daily accounting functions, financial reporting, and internal controls while managing a small team. The ideal candidate will bring deep nonprofit accounting experience, strong leadership skills, and a passion for process improvement. In office 1x - 2x/week. Non-profit experience NOT required. Key Responsibilities: Lead the preparation of timely and accurate financial statements in compliance with GAAP. Oversee daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger management. Supervise and mentor a team of three accounting professionals, fostering growth and accountability. Conduct financial analysis to support strategic planning and executive decision-making. Evaluate and enhance internal controls and operational procedures. Support the development and monitoring of the annual budget. Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and standards. Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation preferred. At least 10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, including 4+ years in a leadership role. Prior experience in nonprofit financial management is preferred. Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles. Demonstrated success in improving financial processes and implementing new systems. Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
