Duties
Apply the full range of polygraph investigative methodologies to resolve and complete administrative, civil, counterintelligence, and criminal investigations by detecting deception, vetting critical information, and assisting in adjudication.
Conduct polygraph examinations in support of CBP divisions and other agencies as directed by management.
Coordinate, plan, and administer polygraph examinations.
Conduct pretest interviews to determine willingness and capability to submit to the examination.
Evaluate physical and psychological suitability for testing to decide whether to conduct the examination.
Prepare accurate, concise, objective investigation reports for legal venues, including potential court testimony.
Conduct extended testing to resolve undecided issues, confirm admissions, or locate evidence as necessary.
Qualifications and eligibility
All Polygraph Examiners hired must be certified by the National Center for Credibility Assessment (NCCA) by attending the Basic Federal Polygraph Training Program.
Experience for GS-12: 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level performing duties such as selecting polygraph techniques, analyzing physiological data, conducting investigations, and preparing reports.
Experience for GS-13: 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level including adapting techniques, collecting evidence, conducting in-depth interviews, and knowledge of rules of evidence and procedures.
Basic Requirements: bachelor's degree; at least two years of investigative experience with a U.S. Government or other law enforcement agency; completion of a Psychophysiological Detection of Deception (PDD) polygraph examination; and be at least 25 years of age.
Transcripts may be required to establish eligibility; resume must clearly show how requirements are met.
Pre-employment and background
Background investigation is required for employment with CBP.
Polygraph examinations may be required or used for reciprocity; polygraph waivers may apply for certain veterans.
Residency: applicants must reside in the United States or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years, with possible waivers under certain conditions.
