All About General Merchandise
Experts of operations, process and efficiency who enable a consistent experience for our guests by ensuring product is set, merchandised, correctly priced, and available on the sales floor. The General Merchandise and Food Sales team leads inbound, outbound, replenishment, and promotional signing processes for all General Merchandise areas. They also lead inventory accuracy, merchandise setup and pricing processes and may lead Food & Beverage and Food Service, providing a fresh and food-safe experience. They enable efficient delivery of merchandise to our guests by owning pick, pack and ship fulfillment work.

Guest service fundamentals and experience building a guest-first culture on your team
Retail business fundamentals including department sales trends, inventory management, guest shopping patterns, pricing and promotions strategies
Leading a team by planning department daily/weekly workload to support business priorities and sales goals, with guidance from your direct leader, while driving process improvements
Leading a team of hourly team members with interviewing, developing, coaching, evaluating and retaining talent
Coaching and training hourly team members to build a capable team with direction from your direct leader
Responsibilities
As a General Merchandise Team Leader, day-to-day work varies. A typical day includes the following responsibilities:
Execute daily/weekly workload to achieve department and store sales goals and guest engagement, including merchandising, pricing, setting and updating displays, sampling, promotions and price changes
Educate your team on operational procedures affecting inventory management, store profitability, and product availability
Assess reports to identify gaps in GM processes and develop plans to resolve them for your leader to review and approve
Be an expert in operations, accuracy, process and efficiency
With guidance from your leader, lead daily tasks such as receiving products, restocking shelves, organizing the backroom, arranging merchandise, and placing promotional signage
Assist with inventory accuracy, merchandise setup and maintenance, and pricing for all store areas
Assign daily tasks to team members based on workload and guest traffic patterns, aligning with business priorities
Help establish goals and hold team members accountable
Assist with fulfillment tasks (pick, pack, ship) as applicable and review fulfillment reports to identify gaps
Collaborate with all teams and leaders to identify priorities and ensure the store is guest-ready
Stay informed about trends and products to educate team members via Target communications
Evaluate candidates for open positions and develop a guest-centric team; support onboarding and skill development
Work a schedule that aligns with guest and business needs (early morning, evening, overnight; weekends)
Support guest services and back-up cashier duties while maintaining a compliance culture, including adult beverage laws
Demonstrate inclusivity, authenticity, respect, and equitable experiences
Model ethical conduct, safety and compliance; lead the team accordingly
Lead and model a safety culture, identify hazards, and ensure timely incident reporting
Model physical security processes to enhance in-store security
Support merchandise protection strategies across the total store, including ordering, storage and application as directed by best practices
Model creating a welcoming experience by greeting guests and assisting with needs
Engage with guests and help solve their needs
Thank guests and acknowledge their visit to Target
If applicable, follow all safety and security training and processes
Address store emergency and compliance needs
All other duties as needed by business

The Good News is that we offer training to help you succeed as a General Merchandise Team Leader. Some basics needed from the start:
High school diploma or equivalent
Age 18 or older
Previous retail experience preferred but not required
Ability to lead and hold others accountable
Communicate on multiple devices and operate scanners and other tech as directed
Work independently and as part of a team
Manage workload and prioritize tasks independently
Remain focused and composed in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks
Welcoming and helpful attitude toward all guests and team members
Effective communication skills
