Overview Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced
Senior Oil and Gas Accountant
to join our finance team in
Houston, Texas . This role is responsible for managing complex accounting tasks, including joint interest billing, revenue accounting, and regulatory compliance reporting. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in upstream oil and gas accounting and must hold an active
CPA license .
Responsibilities
Prepare and review monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports related to oil and gas operations
Manage and oversee revenue and joint interest billing (JIB) processes
Ensure compliance with GAAP, SEC, and internal accounting policies
Prepare detailed analysis of operating costs, capital expenditures, and production-related revenues
Assist in preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
Coordinate with internal departments and external auditors for financial audits and regulatory filings
Monitor and analyze general ledger activity to ensure accuracy and completeness
Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations (e.g., ONRR, severance tax filings)
Identify and implement process improvements for efficiency and accuracy in financial reporting
Mentor junior accounting staff and support their development
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) – REQUIRED
Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in the oil and gas industry (upstream experience preferred)
Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, oil and gas accounting principles (successful efforts or full cost)
Proficient in oil & gas accounting software (e.g., Enertia, Ogsys, or BOLO) and Microsoft Excel
Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with SEC reporting and SOX compliance
Familiarity with ERP systems and data analytics tools
Knowledge of Texas severance tax and ONRR reporting requirements
