The Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) is the department’s lead surveillance, planning and response arm for public events including communicable disease outbreaks and epidemics, pandemics, bioterrorism, and other public health and mass casualty events and disasters. The division includes the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response; State Public Health Laboratory; Health Equity Branch, Communicable Disease Branch; Immunization Branch; Electronic and Disease Reporting; Newcomer Health Branch; and Operations Branch. Position Purpose
This position exists to assist in performing surveillance for respiratory-associated hospitalizations (COVID-19, influenza, and RSV), which are reportable conditions in Colorado, by collecting medical, epidemiologic, and other data as well as managing health information. The position works closely with respiratory disease epidemiologists, other medical record abstractors, project/unit managers, and the Principal Investigator to determine priorities for data collection in order to meet changing and conflicting project objectives in a timely manner. This role applies knowledge of the conditions studied, medical records organization, related databases, medical terminology, diagnoses, tests, and medical information management procedures to assure comprehensive data collection and data quality. It also serves as a liaison between CDPHE and hospital medical records departments and other data sources, supports new surveillance officer training and case report form clarification, and assists with data validation and cleaning to ensure completeness and correctness of data. What You Will Be Doing
Conduct enhanced case surveillance for COVID-19, RSV, and influenza-associated hospitalizations by performing in-depth medical record reviews using standardized data collection forms to collect demographic, clinical, treatment, vaccination, and laboratory information. Abstract medical information from electronic medical records according to specific instructions. Enter data into central databases and track reported cases and completion of record reviews. Request copies of medical records from hospitals when warranted to ensure data completeness. Answer questions from fellow medical record abstractors and collaborate with team members on data quality. Identify hospitalizations that meet the case definition and are reported to CDPHE in EpiTrax and via CHA discharge audits. Enter unreported or missing information into communicable disease databases (EpiTrax, REDCap) as needed. Validate and correct data based on lists from the CDC, project site staff, or internal CDPHE staff. Evaluate reporting source quality and data quality, and report findings to the project epidemiologist, project/unit manager, and/or Principal Investigator. Identify data quality issues and collaborate on flexible solutions to resolve problems. Minimum Qualifications
An applicant may meet the minimum qualifications in one of two ways: through work experience alone or through a combination of education and work experience. Experience Only: Four (4) years of experience in public health or communicable disease control, surveillance, health data management, medical record abstraction, or related field. Education and Experience: A combination of related education in public health, health education, biology, statistics, science, epidemiology, biostatistics, or closely-related field and/or experience equal to four (4) years.
