Overview

Genetic Counselor Assistant role at Stony Brook Medicine. This position is a valuable member of the Genetics team, providing collaborative support with specialty offered for pediatric, oncology, and prenatal patients. The role contributes to the management of the service, coordination of care for patients, optimization of clinic and operational workflows, and working with the team to create a patient-centered environment. Responsibilities

Support the clinical Geneticist and Genetic Counselors with administrative functions, including triaging incoming cases for review and assisting with the collection of necessary patient clinical information in the ambulatory setting. Coordinate and schedule appointments, update patients\' electronic medical records, route telephone calls, and assist with the creation of educational materials and patient letters. Participate in team meetings and performance/quality improvement activities. Obtain/abstract medical records for clinical appointments. Assist in the coordination of genetic testing including insurance investigation, completion of genetic testing order forms, and tracking status of test results. With proper training, review negative results with patients and document appropriately in the electronic medical record. Coordinate and research all insurance coverage for genetic testing; help prepare letters of medical necessity with guidance from a genetic counselor. Provide patients and families with updates regarding the status of testing. Assist with phone inquiries related to genetic services and coordinate genetic testing for family members when necessary. Assist with patient follow-up letters regarding testing results or rescheduling missed appointments. Act as liaison between genetic testing laboratories, health insurance providers, and genetic counselors. Ensure that all genetic test results are documented in the electronic medical record and transferred to the patient chart; follow HIPAA guidelines for patient privacy and confidentiality. Perform other patient care coordination duties as assigned appropriate to rank and salary. Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelor\'s degree and at least 1 year of relevant experience in a healthcare setting with an interest in science. Computer skills with expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel. Familiarity with scientific/medical journal articles and ability to obtain/abstract medical information from those articles. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and follow-through. Ability to work independently with excellent time management, communication and writing skills, phone etiquette, and interpersonal communication. Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Biological/Health Science or an equivalent field. 2 years\' experience in a genetics specialty service. Spanish speaking preferred but not required. Special Notes
