Summary
The Pre-Vocational Math Teacher will be primarily responsible for raising math levels and preparing students to enter the HVAC training program. The Math Teacher will serve a class of approximately 20-25 adult students. Some students have English as a second language. Students are working toward entering the HVAC evening program at SCALE. The Math teacher is responsible for teaching a range of Math topics and must have experience teaching Math to adult learners. It is essential that the Math teacher has training in and successful experience teaching explicit Math strategies. The teacher will collaborate with the Director and Program Administrator to ensure program goals are met, collect and submit attendance records, document student progress, and assist with other DESE-related activities. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree; Masters in Math or Adult Basic Education preferred. Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience – at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants. Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities. Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus. MAPT certification is preferred but not required for this position. Responsibilities Prepare lesson plans and choose appropriate materials, following the ABE Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and MA DESE College and Career Readiness Standards, and submit one lesson plan per month. Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, department meetings and appropriate in-service workshops. Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures. Complete attendance and assessment-related activities as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Work effectively with other teachers, counselors, the program administrator and Director on student and program issues. Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans. Integrate digital literacy into instruction, including using Aztec software for additional practice.
