Smyrna First United Methodist Church (SFUMC) is seeking a detail-oriented and personable Bookkeeper / Business Office Administrator to support the church’s financial operations and work closely with its dedicated staff and leadership team.
In this role, you’ll manage day-to-day bookkeeping for the church, including processing donations and payroll, and preparing monthly financial reports, while ensuring financial integrity and transparency. You’ll be part of a supportive, faith-based community that values collaboration, stewardship, and service.
Responsibilities
Maintain accurate financial records, including accounts payable, receivable, and general ledger entries.
Record donations, tithes, and other income streams in compliance with church policies.
Process payroll, reimbursements, and manage designated or restricted funds.
Prepare monthly financial reports and assist with annual budget tracking and planning.
Ensure compliance with IRS, state, and denominational requirements.
Support the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Senior Pastor, and Finance Committee with reports and data for decision-making.
Help identify opportunities for process improvement and assist with software updates or implementations.
Requirements
At least 5 years of bookkeeping experience, preferably in a church or nonprofit environment, with church experience preferred.
Proficiency with QuickBooks, Realm Accounting, or similar accounting software.
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and a heart for service.
Ability to work independently while engaging with staff, volunteers, and church members.
Flexibility to attend occasional evening meetings (Finance Committee, etc.).
