Overview
The Department of Biology at Colby College is seeking an immunologist to fill an open, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin Fall 2026. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in the biological sciences with emphasis in molecular, cellular or developmental biology, genetics or biochemistry. We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated expertise in immunology, with a research program that addresses questions of fundamental immunology or biomedical applications. Responsibilities
Teach 4.5 courses per year, with laboratories and discussion-based seminar classes constituting a portion of that load. Teaching responsibilities include BI225 Immunology (with lab), BI325 Advanced Immunology (no lab), an additional course in the candidate’s area of expertise, and rotation in the introductory course BI163 The Cellular Basis of Life. Contribute to the campus community through teaching, research, and mentorship with a commitment to undergraduate education. Establish an active research program that includes supervision and mentoring of undergraduates. Collaborate with existing departmental strengths, including potential intersections with physiology, cell biology, molecular or structural biology, neurobiology, endocrinology, or reproductive biology. Engage candidates whose research topics align with students pursuing pre-health professional pathways. Explore affiliations and collaboration opportunities with external research centers (Jackson Laboratory, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences). Potentially be eligible for a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professorship, including dedicated annual research funds and salaries for undergraduate research assistants. Qualifications
Ph.D. in the biological sciences with emphasis in molecular, cellular or developmental biology, genetics or biochemistry. Demonstrated expertise in immunology with a research program addressing fundamental immunology or biomedical applications. Commitment to undergraduate education; teaching experience is desirable. Willingness to contribute to campus access, opportunity, and excellence through teaching, research, and mentorship. Facilities and opportunities
Facilities support invertebrate and fish models and cell culture, but not mammals. Active affiliations with the Jackson Laboratory, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences provide potential for collaborative research opportunities.
