Compensation: Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $56,563-$65,047. To Be Determined Based on Experience and Qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities A School Resource Officer’s daily role is to ensure the campus is safe by being visible and patrolling the interior and exterior of the school grounds. The SRO works closely with the school administration and staff of the assigned school. The collaboration between the administration and law enforcement enables a proactive approach when issues arise at school. The SRO will enforce laws and make any legal arrest necessary to protect students, staff, and school property. The SRO will provide guidance to the school administration leadership team for large gatherings such as sporting events and assemblies to ensure safety.

A Deputy Sheriff is responsible for the general law enforcement work required by the Office of the Sheriff. This work includes keeping the peace, serving the public, protecting lives, rights, and property, taking calls for service, investigating complaints and criminal activity, serving civil and criminal processes, and other papers as required by the courts.

Duties of the School Resource Officer

Enforces federal, state, and local laws, and ordinances.

Investigates criminal activity on school property or involving students assigned to the officer\'s school.

Counsels students in special situations as needed or requested by school officials or parents.

Answers questions from staff and students about juvenile law or North Carolina laws.

Assists law enforcement officers from other agencies with investigations concerning students at the assigned school.

Notifies appropriate school officials regarding potential criminal matters that may impact the school.

Assumes a command role during a criminal incident on school property until relieved by a higher-ranking Sheriff\'s Office supervisor.

Maintains communication with school administration and supervisors through assigned radio communication.

Performs the law enforcement duties of a Deputy Sheriff during non-school months and on an as-needed basis.

Performs related work as required.

Duties of Deputy Sheriff

Patrols a geographic region of the County to detect and deter crime; responds to calls for assistance; conducts preliminary investigations of crimes and complaints; detects unusual conditions; and may maintain surveillance for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects.

Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, and other needs; determines the true nature of the situation and takes warranted action.

Serves criminal papers such as warrants, subpoenas, notices of hearing, and court orders; locates people to serve papers and makes arrests when necessary.

Serves civil process papers such as notices of rights, subpoenas, and court orders dealing with child support and domestic violence; explains papers served and remains on scene until completed.

Performs investigations of accidents and crimes; secures the scene and collects evidence; may serve as evidence custodian; arrests and processes suspects.

Prepares case files for court; attends court to provide evidence when necessary.

Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; provides information to the general public.

Conducts commercial and residential property security checks.

Regulates and directs traffic at busy times and maintains order at public gatherings.

May administer the D.A.R.E. program within County schools; prepares lesson plans and conducts lessons; coordinates related public events.

May serve as School Resource Officer and provide security to the school environment; works with staff on disciplinary issues.

May serve as a K-9 officer and respond to canine-search calls; trains and cares for the canine.

May serve as Court Bailiff providing courtroom security and related duties; transports inmates as needed.

Performs related duties as required and participates in special duties and disaster activities.

Demonstrates working knowledge of Sheriff\'s Office operations; knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and policies related to arrest, search and seizure, and traffic control.

Possesses knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and equipment; ability to testify effectively in court; prepare clear reports; react calmly in emergencies; and maintain public relations with the community.

Qualifications and Requirements Requirements For The Deputy Sheriff/School Resource Officer

Must be a United States Citizen.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Currently hold a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification (BLET).

Have a General Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training and Standards Commission or the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Preferably have two years of law enforcement experience.

Other Information: Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire. Salary incentives are available for experience, military, fluent in Spanish, degree, and/or certifications.
