The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting qualified candidates to fill a

Deputy Sheriff/ School Resource Officer

position. The School Resource Officer’s daily role is to ensure campus safety by maintaining visibility and patrolling the interior and exterior of school grounds. The SRO collaborates with school administration and staff to adopt a proactive safety approach and to develop or improve safety procedures and protocols. The SRO enforces applicable laws and provides guidance to the school leadership team for large gatherings to ensure safety for students, staff, parents, and the community. A Deputy Sheriff is responsible for general law enforcement duties, including keeping the peace, serving the public, and protecting lives, rights, and property within Franklin County. Duties include taking calls for service, investigating complaints and criminal activity, serving civil and criminal processes, and other court-related duties. Duties of the School Resource Officer

Enforce federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Investigate criminal activity on school property or involving students assigned to the officer's school. Counsel students in special situations as needed or requested by appropriate school officials or parents. Answer questions staff and students may have about juvenile law or North Carolina laws. Assist law enforcement officers from other agencies with investigations concerning students attending the officer's school. Notify appropriate school officials regarding potential criminal matters that may impact the school. Assume a command role during a criminal incident on school property until relieved by a higher-ranking Sheriff’s Office supervisor. Maintain communication with school administration and supervisors through assigned radio communication. Perform the Law Enforcement duties of a Deputy Sheriff during non-school months and on an as-needed basis. Perform related duties as required. Duties of Deputy Sheriff

Patrol a geographic region of the County to detect and deter crime; respond to calls for assistance; conduct preliminary investigations; detain or arrest as warranted. Respond to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, and other needs; determine appropriate action. Serve criminal papers (warrants, subpoenas, notices of hearing, etc.) and civil process papers; locate people to serve papers and provide brief explanations of papers served. Investigate accidents and crimes; secure scenes, gather evidence, and assist with investigations. Prepare case files and materials for court; attend court as a witness when required. Advise the public on laws and local ordinances; provide information to the general public. Conduct security checks of commercial and residential properties. Regulate and direct traffic at busy times or during incidents; maintain order at public gatherings. May administer the D.A.R.E. program within County schools, including lesson planning and program events. May serve as School Resource Officer and provide security to school environments and staff during disciplinary issues. May serve as a K-9 officer and respond to canine-related calls, including training and care for the canine. May serve as Court Bailiff to provide courtroom security and related duties. Transports inmates as needed and perform related duties as required. Performs a variety of special duties, critical incident activities, and disaster response. Demonstrates working knowledge of Sheriff’s Office operations, applicable laws, and law enforcement practices. Requirements for the Deputy Sheriff/School Resource Officer

Must be a United States citizen, at least 21 years old, currently hold a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification (BLET), have a General Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training and Standards Commission or the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission, and preferably have two years of law enforcement experience. A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required upon hire. Salary incentives are available for experience, military service, fluency in Spanish, degrees, and/or certifications.
