Responsibilities How You’ll Make a Difference (Essential Functions)

The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for providing strategic direction, leadership, and operational oversight for medical services and palliative care. This role will ensure the delivery of consistent, compliant, and high-quality care with a focus on removing barriers to care. The CMO leads, implements, and executes strategies and service offerings to ensure Agrace is positioned for sustainability in the changing healthcare and regulatory arenas. The CMO serves on the Executive Leadership Team.

Integration of Medical Services Promote strong and collaborative relationships between Agrace’s patient, resident, and client facing programs and all medical providers. Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of medical practice, including the development of short and long-term goals and objectives to ensure high quality care for patients in a changing health care environment. Ensure alignment with all state and federal regulatory requirements, upholding standards set by CMS, the Department of Health, and professional boards to ensure patient care is delivered consistently. In partnership with the Vice President of Medical Services, provide guidance to medical and clinical staff on current trends and practices in hospice, palliative, and dementia care. Provide consultative guidance on medical related matters to internal and external physicians and nurse practitioners and with outside health and regulatory organizations. Identify and prioritize areas of improvement based on Agrace’s values, goals, and resources. In collaboration with the Chief Operations Officer, strengthen the continuum of care between palliative care, hospice, and other service lines to ensure seamless transitions in care. Set clear role expectations and ensure quality is consistently delivered by all physicians and nurse practitioners in accordance with agency policies, procedures, guidelines as well as state and federal regulations and professional administrative codes.

Oversight of Palliative Care Ensure strong operations for Agrace’s Palliative Care program, driving for sustainable growth and financial viability. Set clear objectives for the program and put mechanisms in place to continually monitor productivity, quality, and financial performance. Oversee the team of nurse practitioners and other clinicians who provide the care. Collaborate with the Vice President of Medical Services to ensure the highest levels of palliative medicine standards are achieved. Ensure these services are available throughout Agrace’s service area and that wait times for visits are minimal.

Strategic Planning and Leadership Responsibilities Lead and inspire Agrace’s medical services team with vision and strategic oversight in the development of programs, processes, and initiatives to provide compassionate, comprehensive, high-quality care and service excellence. Co-chairs the Ethics Committee, ensuring it is robust and effective in responding to ethical dilemmas faced by Agrace. Evaluate and evolve medical operations in alignment with changing healthcare environment. Keep leadership and providers informed of key agency initiatives and medical expectations. Promotes a culture that reflects the agency’s values and encourages good performance and rewards productivity. Collaborate with other leaders to effectively communicate and implement new initiatives. Actively participate and drive efforts related to Strategic Plan and Annual Operating Plan development. Participate in shared responsibility among Executive Leadership Team to ensure accessibility of senior leadership to front-line staff in the event of an emergency or critical situation. Contribute to Agrace’s financial health by ensuring medical services are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively.

Build New Programs In accordance with Agrace’s Strategic and Annual Operating Plans, participate in the successful development of new programs. Lead the establishment of a small primary care practice to meet the needs of Agrace’s Dementia Village. Work collaboratively with other leaders to meet the medical needs of Dementia Village residents and, as appropriate, Day Club members. Ensure services are provided in a financially sound manner while maintaining high quality standards.

You Bring (Qualifications)

Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy required.

Master’s degree in health care or business administration or related discipline required.

Certification / Registration / Licensure: Current unrestricted MD or DO Wisconsin State license to practice medicine required. Additional licensure to practice medicine will be required in states where Agrace operates.

Board certified

Minimum of 10 years of leadership and supervisory experience in an administrative position including full accountability for quality outcomes, preferably in a hospice, home health, or related program.

Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a Board-Certified physician, preferably in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Practice.

Management experience in a sizeable organization, including experience working as part of a cross-functional team, developing organizational culture, strategy, and policy, preferred.

Leads proactively, drives for results, sets direction, fosters communication, builds relationship, and resolves problems.

Experienced in managing continued growth.

Knowledge and experience with health care delivery systems, policies, accreditation standards, laws, regulations, and reimbursement practices; hospice-specific knowledge and experience preferred.

Intermediate Microsoft Office Suite skills

Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others.
