Pay Rate

$23 per hour.

Summary

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, and updating patient information. Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
  • Properly explains the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear yet courteous manner. Demonstrates technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understands all physician orders, matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test orders.
  • Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% correctness. Packages specimens for transport and stores them at the required temperature, placing samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and labeling accurately.
  • Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations, attends annual department trainings, answers telephone calls, and reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Qualifications

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state where employed, as required in some states.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED. 2–4 years of experience (as indicated).
