BUSINESS UNIT: TERMINALS
Kinder Morgan is the largest independent terminal operator in North America, providing a network of 144 terminals serving storage, distribution, blending and logistical needs. Our terminals store and handle renewable fuels, petroleum products, chemicals, vegetable oils and other products. We have a combined liquids storage capacity of approximately 151 million barrels and handle about 59 million tons of dry bulk materials annually.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Operates a 29-ton P&H static skip-overhead bucket crane (cab controlled) to lift, move, and position loads of petroleum coke, maintaining proper storage and loading coke from pit to grizzly hopper by following all associated procedures with an 18-yard clamshell bucket.
- Participates in maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of cranes, bucket and related equipment (as trained).
- May be assigned to general duties in all areas of terminal operations.
- Maintains open communication with Driller Operator, Supervision and Maintenance Personnel via radio and other proper means.
- Operates, monitors and maintains coke cutting equipment within the coke petroleum coke handling facility.
- Follows proper safety rules and operating procedures to support zero-tolerance safety objectives.
- Performs decoking techniques following procedures, with attention to hot spots and additional quenching as needed.
- Works with Operator to un-head and re-head coke drums and performs the final sweep of the coke drum.
- Capable of operating under fresh air with a SCBA or facemask.
- Inspects equipment prior to and after operation; reports maintenance needs and conducts frequent audits on related drum cutting equipment.
- Performs basic troubleshooting of petroleum coke cutting equipment.
- Assists other coke cutting personnel with cleaning operations as required; performs housekeeping duties of the coke cutting area.
- Maintains and lubricates cutting deck petroleum coke cutting equipment.
- Operates heavy equipment to gouge, level, and distribute petroleum coke from inbound conveyors to outbound conveyors and storage to re-claimer safely and efficiently.
- Operates dozer and other equipment (D-9 and D-10 Dozers, skid steer, forklift, etc.) to move material and support loading to vessels; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Gains certification to operate each piece of equipment as required (excavator, forklift, telehandler, skid steer, man lift, etc.).
- Trains on remote-controlled ship loader and ensures satisfactory vessel loading while maintaining safety.
- Ensures work performed is done properly and safely. Operators may train and perform duties of other terminal Equipment Operator/Maintenance positions as needed for progression.
Position Requirements
Education, Experience Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- Prior experience as a heavy equipment operator is preferred, but training is provided for qualified applicants.
Competencies, Skills And Abilities
- Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Uses proper Personal Protective Equipment and reports damaged PPE and unsafe conditions.
- Able to work at different locations as needed.
- Performs housekeeping and general maintenance as required.
- Ability to apply common sense in following instructions and communicating verbally.
- Willingness to work shift schedules and overtime with little or no notice.
- Regular attendance is required; shift work (day/night) may be required; on-call for emergency calls.
Certifications, Licenses, Etc.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Must meet requirements to enter foreign trade zones, including background checks by U.S. Coast Guard and DHS, and obtain/maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- Must pass Drug and Alcohol tests and a Hair follicle test.
- Safety training/certification as required by customers and Kinder Morgan at all locations.
- Must complete/pass DISA/ISTC background checks and testing for refinery entry when required.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Understand and comply with customer and Kinder Morgan rules and policies.
- Team-based work, follow directions, and adhere to schedules and safety rules.
- Regularly stand, walk, climb, bend, squat, reach for extended periods.
- Able to handle evolving conditions and report safety/environmental concerns.
- Outdoors in all weather conditions; dusty environments; required to wear FR/CFR clothing.
- Must be able to lift 70 pounds and handle large tools; climb on/off equipment; comfortable with heights.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and loud noise; work at high and precarious places; risk of electrical shock.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently as well as in a team.
