Job Summary The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for all aspects of the mechanical design of assigned projects, especially HVAC plumbing. Projects are generally larger and more complex, requiring identification and solution of mechanical design problems. The engineer initiates conceptual designs subject to approval by the Mechanical Engineer Team Lead, Engineering Manager, and Preconstruction Manager.

Duties / Responsibilities

Responsible for all aspects of the mechanical design of the project assigned

Organize the design and engineering effort required for assigned projects

Report to the team lead mechanical engineer regarding scheduling requirements

Direct and accept responsibility for the work of designers and engineers assigned to the project

Make adjustments to drawings, calculations, and specifications as required by the team lead mechanical engineer

Must be familiar with the project's scope of work, engineering, and construction budget

Assist in developing and maintaining design and engineering standards

Utilize knowledge of engineering practices, mathematics, materials, and other physical sciences to complete the drawings with a minimum of supervision

Collaborate with project teams to monitor and meet milestones of the project schedule within the allotted budgets

Inform the team lead mechanical engineer of project scope and budget changes; monitor project milestones to assure quality and budget adherence

Perform site surveys and equipment assessments; site visits may require overnight travel

Provide project engineering coordination during construction operations as assigned

Serve in a support role on projects as directed by the team lead mechanical engineer

Support the commissioning team with all aspects of commissioning services

Develop accurate preliminary design solutions for prospective complex projects within an expedited timeframe

Develop and maintain productive relationships with customers throughout the course of a project

Other duties as assigned within the scope of this role

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering

Minimum of seven (7) years’ mechanical or HVAC engineering experience with a professional engineering firm, automation contractor, or mechanical contractor engaged in MEP related or similar work desired.

Professional Mechanical Engineer’s license is a plus, but not required

Willingness to travel to worksites, up to 25%

Driver’s license and reliable transportation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong understanding of mechanical, controls, electrical, and construction means and methods associated with the renovation of commercial and institutional buildings and/or similar facilities

Proficient user of Microsoft Office suite; highly proficient use of Excel and other construction-industry software

Familiarity with project management software (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam Revu)

Basic understanding of AutoCAD/Revit design software

Excellent mathematical skills to perform duties, review or prepare budgets, and effectively perform the role of a mechanical engineer

Strong communication skills (oral and written); able to relay information to various audiences, including customers and prospective customers, managers, leadership, colleagues, and business associates; able to prepare professional written communications

Strong interpersonal skills; ability to foster and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external individuals from various backgrounds

Highly collaborative and focused on sharing details routinely and consistently with team members

Self‑managing, able to work autonomously when necessary and effectively integrate with project teammates to meet deadlines and expectations

Demonstrate a persistent optimism and the ability to navigate challenges in a way that produces value, exceeds expectations, and promotes company success

Working Conditions

Work is performed mostly in office settings. Some outdoor work is required in the inspection of land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities.

Hand‑eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers, and various office equipment.

Employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms; also seated, climbed or balanced, stooped, knelt, crouched or crawled; talked or heard; smelled.

Employee may occasionally lift and move up to 10 pounds. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Employee may work out of weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places; occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. Noise level is usually quiet to moderate.

Travel may include overnight stays for multiple nights; travel may be by personal vehicle or commercial airline.
