General Position Summary

This position is primarily responsible for creating, maintaining, and improving the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programs and processes used to make production components with CNC equipment, and to set up CNC equipment for production machinists to operate. This position works with M.E. (Manufacturing Engineering) staff to design tooling and uses CNC and manual equipment to produce those tools. Additionally, this position works with the product development team during the design and prototyping process.

Essential Functions & KRAs (Key Result Areas)

Safety/Culture

Continuously maintains Orenco management's safety, cultural, and professional standards.

Performs all tasks in a safe and responsible manner.

CNC Programming and Setups

Sets up and operates CNC machines to run according to production schedule of both internal and external jobs to meet customer requirements.

Studies part drawings to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and setup required.

Provides feedback to M.E. on drawing issues, tolerances, and machinability of features.

Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth of cut.

Performs setup of CNC equipment for production runs, verifies setup and condition of equipment, and conformance of product to drawing. Applies offsets as needed to ensure parts meet tolerance.

Performs daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on CNC machinery.

Participates in defining best practices and processes in the manufacturing environment.

Complies with all quality policies, specifications, regulations, and instructions.

Archives programs and keeps records of revisions of CNC programs.

Tooling

Works with the Engineering/Tooling department and production team to design and build tooling and fixturing.

Documents design using SolidWorks.

Stores drawings, models, and programs in PDM (Product Data Management).

Product Development

Works with the Product Development team to design and improve production components.

Uses machining equipment to produce prototype components.

Tests prototypes for assembly, manufacturability, form, fit, and function.

Attends Kaizen (Continuous improvement), Gemba walks, and other Lean/continuous improvement functions.

Participates in design reviews and DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to ensure designs meet all stakeholder needs.

Works with Engineering and Drafting to document tolerances and critical features.

Other

Work to be done during manufacturing business hours, which may include an occasional early and/or later shift as needed. Occasional overtime may be required.

Regular, consistent, and predictable attendance is required.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education High school diploma or equivalent required.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

Five years related experience and training programming CNC machining equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Uses gauges and measuring instruments to measure components both to reverse engineer and to verify conformance to drawings.

Understands, interprets, and edits G-code programming.

Recognizes, deploys, and properly uses inserts, fixtures, and tooling.

Understands and has the ability to perform tool wear offsets.

CNC programming experience using SolidWorks/CAMWorks to create CNC programs for both CNC lathes and mills.

Ability to create SolidWorks drawings of parts and assemblies.

Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, technical math, and all GD&T practices with the ability to analyze part requirements.

Basic project management skills for tooling/equipment design and product development.

Knowledge of basic Lean and 5S methods and tools.

Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety practices and regulations.

Ability to operate manual mills and lathes to create fixtures and tooling, or other custom machined components.

Ability to perform basic mathematical computations and apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Effectively communicates and understands both verbal and written job instructions.

Ability to be flexible and adjust to priority changes with little notice and to remain calm under high-pressure situations.

Ability to use sound judgement and follow-through in problem-solving and decision-making processes.

Must meet Orenco's approved driver criteria: valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, current vehicle insurance if used for business, and meet company insurability requirements.

Working Conditions Indoor production environment involving exposure to acetylene and nitrogen gases, paints, solvent fumes, and dust. Noise level is moderate to high. Respirator and hearing protection are available but not required. Some exposure to glare from welding and cutting processes; PPE such as face shields, safety glasses, and gloves may be required.

Physical Requirements Regular duties include seeing, hearing, speaking, reading, and writing. Manufacturing floor work includes handling, measuring, cutting, stacking, lifting (up to 20 lbs unassisted, up to 50 lbs with assistance), standing for long periods, and climbing stairs and ladders. Ability to move products with overhead crane, forklift, pallet jack, or hand truck. May travel to project sites; travel requirements depend on business needs.
