Attorney I (#018843) Office of General Counsel, Columbia (RICHLAND) Position: Attorney I

Location: Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina

Responsibilities

Represents the agency in defense of civil lawsuits, including investigation, case preparation, trial preparation and appeals.

Handles complex and/or sensitive litigation; represents the agency before the State Personnel Grievance Committee and in appeals.

Works with associated attorneys in outside counsel cases, providing background information, case analysis and relevant law.

Provides legal advice to agency employees, attorneys, court officials and other agencies on interpretation of state and federal laws, agency policy and procedures.

Reviews agency policy; develops new policy to comply with relevant statutes and case law.

Responds to correspondence from attorneys, court officials and state agencies.

Conducts independent legal research and works independently in performance of all of the above.

Qualifications

A Juris Doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.

Membership in the South Carolina Bar and completion of rule requirements within six (6) months of employment.

Completion of the State Bar's 403 requirements within six (6) months of employment.
