WSP is searching for a Lead Civil Engineer
for our Charlotte, North Carolina office to be part of our Civil Design service line that supports WSP’s power, industrial, and municipal clientele across the southeast. The following locations will also be considered: Asheville, NC, and Greensboro, NC. The position relies heavily on an ability to interact with clients, team leadership skills, and technical knowledge. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on a breadth of civil projects ranging from erosion and sediment control plans, spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC) plans, hydraulics and hydrology design, civil grading, and landfill design and closure projects. Additionally, as part of a growing team in our Earth & Environment Business Line, you will assist in the expansion of the Civil Engineering team’s portfolio of clients. As a civil engineer, the candidate will be responsible for execution of calculations, design options, reports, agency reviews, and construction drawings for civil design projects. The candidate will have a strong desire to interact with clients and foster long lasting relationships.
Your Impact
Manage and direct small to medium project design teams
Prepare scope of work and costing documents for proposals
Coordinate with other senior engineering staff, lead junior team members, project stakeholders and other disciplines to manage an organized approach to project execution
Perform professional civil engineering work including design of erosion and sediment control measures in compliance with state requirements, SPCC plans, site grading using AutoCAD Civil3D, hydraulic systems (closed and open conduits), hydrologic analyses, and stormwater management facilities
Prepare permit applications and respond to agency (owner) comments in design
Prepare construction drawings and specifications to implement designs
Prepare client-ready reports and drawings
Evaluate design options and understand cost/benefit of solutions
Training and mentoring junior staff
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements
Who You Are Required Qualifications
Minimum Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
Professional Engineer registration in North Carolina, or ability to obtain within one year
7-10 years of professional engineering experience
Valid state driver’s license. Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening
Must be willing to travel to project sites and business meetings, as required
Project management experience and team leadership skills
Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Civil design software tools
Proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations
Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to junior-level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC
Excellent leadership and interpersonal verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization
Tactical lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment
Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, regulators, and company-wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exists
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Strong ability to quickly adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility to a variety of schedules and hours to meet business needs
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
