Overview
Public Works Inspector at County of Monterey. This is a full-time position in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. The Public Works Inspector is expected to interpret engineering and architectural drawings and ensure projects are constructed in accordance with project plans and specifications. The role involves understanding and enforcing local, state, and federal codes as applicable, and working closely with contractors, utility companies, other City departments, businesses, and residents. The Inspector will respond to public inquiries, manage communications, and perform extensive field inspections.
Responsibilities
Inspect the methods and materials used in the construction of streets, sewers, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drains, sanitary sewer systems, building structures and related mechanical/electrical systems to ensure conformance to City standards, plans and specifications.
Meet with contractors and consulting engineers regarding engineering projects.
Read and interpret plans and specifications; approve minor field adjustments and consult with supervisor on deviations.
Assist in final inspections on subdivision projects.
Inspect backfilling operations by utility companies and contractors on City-owned right-of-ways.
Answer public inquiries and resolve issues related to construction projects.
Perform and coordinate tests of construction materials and methods; collect samples or perform tests as needed; verify compliance in underground utilities, flatwork, HMA paving, and building systems.
Enforce compliance with City construction requirements, including storm water run-off laws, ordinances, and policies.
Ensure safety compliance, including trench shoring, proper use of equipment, and traffic control; enforce safety precautions at project sites.
Maintain up-to-date project records, prepare progress reports, and review/approve as-built drawings for accuracy.
Inspect existing public facilities for defects that could be hazardous.
Prepare and file daily inspection reports for development, public works, and capital improvement projects.
Assist staff with field investigations for various projects/tasks.
Support the relationship between the City of Monterey and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior.
Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job classification.
Typical Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Education:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
Experience:
Four (4) years of experience in subprofessional engineering work or supervision of public works construction and maintenance, including one (1) year as a public works or construction inspector. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge and Skills
Principles and practices of engineering related to design, construction, and maintenance of public works facilities.
Materials, methods, and equipment used in construction of public works facilities.
Testing methods and equipment for construction materials.
Skills
Making accurate measurements and computing quantities of materials.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Problem analysis and solution with consultation on major changes.
Managing multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
Preparing correspondence and work orders; proficient with word processing and spreadsheets.
License and Certification
Must possess a valid California Driver’s License at time of appointment and be insurable at the City’s standard rate unless otherwise approved.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Physical ability to stand, walk, sit at a computer, lift up to 35 pounds, climb ladders, and perform field inspections.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; interact with the public and City staff.
Work in a combination of field and office environments with potential exposure to inclement weather and hazardous conditions.
