Overview

The City of Buena Park is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Public Works Inspector. The ideal candidate will be experienced and capable of multi-tasking, enforcing City standards, and providing excellent customer service. A strong team member attitude is a must. The Public Works Inspector contributes to the Capital Improvement Program by managing City-funded and private construction projects, including inspections of sewer and water lines, storm drains, public buildings, park projects, major street improvements, and construction site inspections. Incumbent may occasionally be required to work varied schedules throughout the year. Varied schedules may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends with advance notice. General Purpose

Under general supervision, inspects public and private development projects, residential improvements and rights-of-way permit work; ensures compliance with city standards, municipal codes, plans and specifications; and performs related work as required. Distinguishing Characteristics

The Public Works Inspector reviews engineering plans and conducts field inspections of private and public construction projects. It is distinguished from the Senior Public Works Inspector, who performs more varied and complex inspections on larger-scale projects. Essential Functions

Inspect capital improvement projects, including street, sewer, water, storm drain, traffic signals, and public buildings. Review preliminary job plans, specifications and contract documents. Coordinate construction work and procedures. Study and compare layout, materials and dimensions with construction drawings, blueprints and rights-of-way permit requirements. Coordinate work with contractors, developers, city department officials, utility companies and public agencies. Prepare and maintain accurate activity records and construction progress reports daily. Attend project and professional meetings with city, county, state, and Federal agencies. Interface with residents, business owners, and the general public. Respond to basic questions from public and business representatives concerning work being performed. Qualifications

Knowledge of

Proper inspection methods for construction, private development and rights-of-way projects; streets and utility construction methods and materials; basic record keeping; basic principles of engineering and math; safety regulations including city standards, municipal codes, plans and specifications, and applicable laws; effective customer service techniques. Ability To

Read and interpret job plans, blueprints, specifications and schematics; follow construction surveying procedures; operate a calculator for basic engineering computations; prepare and present administrative reports and staff recommendations; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, contractors, developers, utility companies, public and private agencies, and the general public. Work occurs in both office and outdoor settings. Frequent driving is required for field observations, meetings, and site work. May encounter electrical currents, dust, heat, moisture, traffic, and variable weather; may work in confined spaces during inspections. Education/Training/Experience

High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent is required. Two years of experience in the review and inspection of city projects, private developments, public improvements, and rights-of-way permit work is required. Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements

Valid Class C California driver license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required. Applicant Information/Exam Weight

SALARY RANGE: Six steps from entry up to E step. RETIREMENT: CalPERS; employee contribution. VACATION: 10 working days per year for the first five years; additional vacation after five years. SICK LEAVE: 8 hours per month with no maximum. HOLIDAYS: Approximately 11 per year. MEDICAL INSURANCE: Several plans; city pays a portion. DENTAL INSURANCE: Three plans; employee may contribute as per bargaining unit. VISION INSURANCE: One plan; employee contribution. LIFE INSURANCE: City-paid; varies by bargaining unit. LONG TERM DISABILITY: City-paid; not eligible for police sworn personnel. OTHER BENEFITS: EAP, deferred compensation, child care assistance and more per bargaining unit.
