Physician – Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Pay Range $220,000.00 – $250,000.00 per year

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office. Former EDRP participants are ineligible.

Qualifications To qualify:

United States citizenship or appointment under VA policy for non‑citizens

Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree approved by the VA in the year completed

Full, unrestricted medical license in the U.S. or District of Columbia

Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (ACGME, AOA, or other accredited program)

Board‑certified in Internal or Family Medicine with board eligibility in Geriatrics and/or Hospice/Palliative Medicine (preferred)

Proficiency in spoken and written English

Physical requirements: lift 15–44 pounds, stand, walk, and perform other duties as specified; must pass a physical examination and a drug test

Duties

Open continuous announcement remaining until December 8, 2025; initial cutoff for referral on October 14, 2025, with subsequent cutoffs every 2 weeks.

Provide primary care to Veterans in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Center, including outpatient and inpatient care, and collaborate with RN and interprofessional teams.

Participate in after‑hours coverage via CLC on‑call rotation.

Perform medical evaluations, physical exams, mental status and psychiatric exams, acute care consultations, and education for patients and support systems.

Initiate referrals and coordinate care per protocol; maintain documentation standards.

Maintain BLS certification; precept and collaborate with nurse practitioners; assist with quality and performance improvement projects.

Participate in peer review and proctoring as required; advise on scope of services and resource adequacy.

Serve on medical staff meetings and relevant committees; provide leadership, education, and liaison functions.

Engage in university and community duties, including committee service and networking with aging‑related entities.
