Description Of Work The North Carolina Department of Revenue is looking for a Tax Auditor in the Motor Fuels Section of the Examination Division. This is a full‑time, permanent position with a hybrid remote work schedule and state benefits, including health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, and retirement. This position will work out of the Raleigh Service Center. The minimum starting salary is $54,137.
The Motor Fuels Section administers and enforces motor fuels tax laws, motor carrier laws, and some motor vehicle laws. The Motor Fuels Tax Auditor examines motor fuels tax returns and records to ensure taxpayer compliance with the revenue laws of North Carolina, and conducts audits for International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and International Registration Plan (IRP) purposes.
Responsibilities
Perform accurate and complete audits of financial books and records of motor fuel suppliers, distributors, and service stations registered with the Excise Tax Division to determine tax compliance with multiple tax schedules.
Interpret and apply tax laws to ensure compliance with revenue laws and motor vehicle laws by employing professional auditing and accounting principles and practices.
Maintain an audit plan, including candidate selection, scheduling taxpayer interviews, reviewing records, and preparing and submitting audit reports for timely review.
Conduct audits on the taxpayer’s place of business; some overnight and out‑of‑state travel may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences
A vehicle and a valid driver's license are required due to the travel requirements for this position.
Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices.
Basic proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software.
Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Income Tax.
Recruitment Range:
$54,137 - $84,388
