Assistant Director of Human Resources
Position Summary The Assistant Director of Human Resources is responsible for collaborating with staff and faculty throughout the university to improve HR processes in support of the university’s mission and strategic initiatives. The position assists with a variety of HR-related activities such as employee relations, recruiting, benefits, HRIS, accommodations, leave, and project management. The role has general oversight of office operations, including managing the front office staff and serves as the senior HR professional in the absence of the Associate Vice President and HR Director. The Assistant Director of Human Resources reports to the Associate Vice President for Human Resources.

Job Duties
Ensures consistent and equitable application of personnel policies, laws, and regulations throughout the university by providing information to departments and management regarding applicable policies and regulations.
Assists in the development, implementation, and administration of policies and programs.
Conducts investigations into employee relations matters.
Counsels and advises managers on identifying, addressing, and facilitating solutions for employee issues. Advises managers on how to document performance or other issues and follow the progressive discipline process.
Assist in developing strategic plans for HR.
Manages and approves actions in HRIS and troubleshoots/resolves issues.
Manages and trains the front office staff to ensure exceptional customer service is provided, work is accurate and completed timely, and the employee personnel files are completed and up-to-date.
Works closely with the Payroll Department to resolve issues.
Designs and develops new HR processes to improve the efficiency of HR operations and administration and recommends new approaches/procedures to effect continual improvement of operations.
Tracks and manages departmental expenditures and computer inventory; approves purchase orders and ensures accounts do not exceed available funding.
Conducts and coordinates institutional surveys such as The Chronicle – Great Colleges to Work For and ensures timely completion.
Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with departments across the university, especially the Payroll, Finance, and Technology departments.
Coordinates various employee activities and events.
Represents HR on various campus and community committees.
Assists with departmental special projects as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of HR principles and practices, labor laws, employee benefits, compensation and classification, compliance, and reporting laws.
Understanding the workflow of HR operations. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to think through problems, organize and seek out information, identify key factors and underlying causes, and generate solutions or resolve discrepancies.
Ability to develop and maintain relationships in order to establish trust, and credibility. Ability to assert ideas and influence others to gain support and commitment for shared projects.
Ability to effectively handle and resolve employee relations matters, as well as handle stressful and/or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and organization to monitor performance and implement and oversee processes.
Ability to work independently and as an effective team member in a fast-paced environment. Requires the ability to be proactive, prioritize, and work under pressure.
Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, customer service, follow-through, teamwork, and flexibility.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to effectively engage in public speaking, and present informative and understandable presentations in front of groups.
Strong computer skills and ability to learn new software applications, including database management software and web-based applications. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
Required Work Experience Five (5) years of professional experience in a Human Resources role within an HR department, including at least two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
PHR, SHRM-HR.
HR experience within higher education.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations None specified.
Work Hours Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed to meet departmental goals.
Physical Demands
Ability to actively engage in events for extended periods of time.
Ability to regularly move about campus and event venues to actively engage faculty, staff, and students, as well as attend meetings and/or events at various campus locations.
