Overview TransitAmerica Services, Inc. is currently seeking a Trainmaster in San Jose & San Francisco, CA to join our team.

The pay range for this position is $135,000 - $150,000 annually.

Duties And Responsibilities

This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.

Oversee day-to-day train operations originating, terminating, and turning at or near San Jose Diridon; support corridor-wide service. Maintain operational readiness for PTC-governed territory and terminal operations.

Coordinate with Dispatch, Mechanical, Signals, and Track to minimize delays; manage service disruptions and special events. Communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders (Dispatch, Stations, First Responders, OEM partners).

Conduct field observations, job briefings, and safety audits. Assist with any SOP updates, tabletop drills, and after-action reviews.

Enforce FRA requirements and rules, such as GCOR and System Special Instructions. Lead and document proficiency tests and completions.

Investigate incidents, injuries, and rule violations. Produce thorough and detailed reports, along with consistent fact-finding processes for corrective action plans.

Plan and coordinate targeted campaigns such as seasonal readiness, storm response, trespasser mitigation, grade crossing safety.

Monitor KPIs such as on-time performance, delay minutes, safety metrics, customer feedback and execute improvement plans.

Lead and develop training for Engineers, Conductors, and Assistant Conductors; recognize high performance and address deficiencies.

Coordinate crew staffing, lineup changes, timesheets/payroll inputs, and training/certifications in accordance with CBAs and policy.

Support public-facing operations during special services and events. Be a visible presence on platforms and trains; support passengers during service impacts.

Flexible schedule; including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotation.

Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.

Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

Must have 5+ years railroad operating experience (commuter, intercity, or freight), including time in a supervisory role. Or Prior Trainmaster/Terminal Manager or Yardmaster experience in passenger rail.

Demonstrated proficiency with GCOR, timetable/special instructions, and terminal/road operations.

Demonstrates strong incident management, service recovery, and sound decision-making under pressure.

Excellent interpersonal communication; experience working in a union environment.

Knowledge of Microsoft Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Safetrack, and TPS.

Demonstrated knowledge of FRA Parts 217/218/219/225/228/240/242 (or equivalent) and PTC operations.

Experience with large terminals (meets/turns), special events, and multi-department coordination.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.

Maintain a valid driver's license and endorsements as required per position.

Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.

Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements

Work primarily in an office environment.

Frequently sits for extended periods of time.

Frequently use a computer keyboard and office related equipment.

Requires occasional standing, walking, lifting, stooping or bending.

Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.

Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.
