Under the direction of a Transportation Surveyor Party Chief, incumbents perform a wide variety of professional land surveying work in a field setting. Incumbent serves as a member of a field survey crew and performs professional surveying work in Caltrans. The following information provides context about eligibility, application resources, and related materials. Working Conditions
The work is usually along the traveled way of highways, often in remote areas and in heavy construction zones. Work may be performed in adverse weather conditions, including high heat and freezing cold. The position requires the use of heavy-duty work clothes and safety boots. Manual labor can be intense and may include clearing brush with cutting tools. Survey locations can be in tick-infested terrain. The incumbent may drive survey stakes and markers with sledgehammers for extended periods and may walk over steep and uneven terrain while transporting stakes, supplies, and equipment. Work may occur in very noisy environments and near high-speed traffic and heavy equipment. Candidates meeting minimum qualifications based on possession of an educational or Land Surveyor in Training or Land Surveyor certificate must include copies of degree/transcripts or LSIT/LS certificate with the application (STD. 678) to be considered.
