Highway Maintenance Specialist – Akron
Join the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) as a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Akron, CO. Applications are considered from residents and non-residents of Colorado. What You Will Do No two days are the same; you will respond to weather and emergencies, work in a team, and maintain roadways through various tasks.
Your Main Job Activities
Plowing snow
Operating heavy equipment (tandem dump truck, loader, tractor‑mower, etc.)
Mowing grass and weeds
Removing debris from roadways, culverts, tunnels
Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, asphalt
Digging ditches
Installing and repairing guardrails, highway markers, signs, warnings, and lights
Filling potholes and cracks
Setting out traffic control signs and cones
Removing and covering graffiti
Installing pavement markings/striping
Managing traffic during emergencies
Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
Following safety guidance and wearing proper PPE

What CDOT Provides
Personal protective equipment (uniforms, boots, hard hats, gloves, respirators, tools)
Full payment for CDL physical after first year
Partial reimbursement (up to 50%) for CDL renewal after first year
CPR and first‑aid training
Career training opportunities
40‑hour work weeks, with overtime during weather emergencies
4‑day work schedule (10‑hour days Monday‑Thursday) during summer months (May‑September)
Opportunities to learn new equipment and advance within CDOT
Your Work Environment
High noise exposure
Fumes, odors, dust, chemicals
Work near traffic, sometimes high speed
Use of ladders, scissor lifts up to 20 ft
Driving CDOT vehicles
Flexible hours, potential overtime, weekends, holidays
Extreme temperatures and variable weather up to 12,000 ft elevation
Minimum Qualifications At least 2 years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience. Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air brakes restriction. Must pass background and medical screening.

Maintain valid CDL Class A or B; transfer non‑Colorado CDL within 30 days of relocation to Colorado
Pre‑employment screening: background, driving records, drug test, DOT physical
On‑call duty and shift work
Emergency response outside regular hours, potential overtime
Live within 30‑minute drive from work base
Training: 2 weeks new employee, annual refresher
Hazardous materials endorsement within 6 months–1 year, if required
